Women’s lacrosse releases 2022 schedule

WEST POINT, Ga. (Feb. 2, 2022) – The Point University women's lacrosse team announced their 2022 schedule on Wednesday. The Skyhawks have 16 games lined up for the 2022 season, including seven inside River Bowl Stadium.

Head Coach Bianca Rojas is entering her third season at the helm of the program, and her goal for the team is to have fun and enjoy the game.

"Every bone in my body is competitive, and as a coach, I want to win, but win or lose, our program has been waiting to return to a normal structure, and I want my team to enjoy being back," Rojas said. "I am also excited that this is our first full season since 2019," Rojas said. "While it's been exciting, it has also been challenging. This time last year, we were dealing with constant quarantines, social distanced practices, and virtual classes, and now our athletes are back in in-person classes and a regular-season schedule. I know by mid-season, we will be at our peak!"

Season overview

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Skyhawks' season was cut short in 2020 and played a conference-only schedule in 2021. With the return to a more 'normal structure,' the Skyhawks' schedule features nine nonconference matchups and seven Appalachian Athletic Conference matchups.

Point opens their season with five road games before hosting in-state rival Truett McConnell on Saturday, March 5, in their home opener. Point will play five teams in the NAIA Women's Lacrosse Preseason Coaches Top 10 Poll, with their season opener being against No. 3 Life University. Point will travel and face No. 1 Keiser, No. 5 Reinhardt, No. 10 Georgetown, and host No. 8 SCAD Savannah.

Rojas says one of the most anticipated games for her team will be against AAC foe Brenau who the Skyhawks are scheduled to play on March 23 in Gainesville, Georgia.

"The girls and I are on the same page about beating Brenau," Rojas said. "We lost by one goal in overtime last season, and it essentially cost us from participating in the AAC tournament so that that game will be very momentous."

On the roster

Captain goalkeeper Kayla Bone will lead this year's squad. Bone finished the 2021 season No. 10 in the nation in saves per game (10.250) and No. 20 in total saves (82). She had a career-high of 20 saves in Point's game against AAC Champions Reinhardt last season. Rojas says she expects freshman Kelli Grimsley to be a huge asset on both sides of the field with aggressive defensive play and ability to shoot. On the attack side, freshman Sydney Hanna and sophomore Victoria Cortes will be leading the offensive front for the Skyhawks, and sophomore Destinie Claggion and junior-transfer Cynia Cadett are expected to lead Point in the backfield.

Season's focus

Rojas shared that the word her team is focusing on this season is "improve."

"I say improve every day, if not multiple times in practice," said Rojas. "We have improved so much from last year, last semester and our first week back this semester. I've seen so much improvement in our attitudes, effort, in the weight room, skills, and most importantly, our culture."
