Jordan Palmer surpasses 1,000 career digs as Volleyball sweeps Faulkner in home finale

WEST POINT, Ga. (Oct. 27, 2023) - The Point University Volleyball team returned to the court for a Southern States Athletic Conference matchup against Faulkner University in the home regular-season finale where the Skyhawks put the Eagles away in a sweep. 

Set One (25-13, Win) 

The first set started with the Skyhawks catching their rhythm as Lexi Arter added two service aces for the Skyhawks to lead 6-3. Point continued to respond to what Faulkner gave them as Claire Cordell chimed in with two consecutive service aces to push Point ahead 10-5. After Hannah Bryan's kill, Tianna Kynard responded with a kill of her own which was followed by a service ace from Jordan Palmer, and a kill from Sameily Marquez. Marquez continued to go on a tear as the following three kills came from Marquez to move Point's lead to 16-8. A kill from Claire Cordell and a block from Tianna Kynard continued to help the Skyhawks bring their intensity as the Skyhawks led by double digits. Faulkner responded with two consecutive but Point was unfazed as a kill from Paige Lowe and Claire Cordell along with an error from the Eagles helped the Skyhawks take the first set with a score of 25-13. 

Set Two (25-21, Win) 

The second set started with the Eagles adding three attack errors which was followed by a service ace from Paige Lowe to lead 4-0. An attack error from Point gave Faulkner their first score but Tianna Kynard responded by adding to the Skyhawks' lead. Faulkner kept it close for the following scores but three kills coming from Sameily Marquez, Jadakate Judkins, and Claire Cordell put the Skyhawks ahead 14-9. Following the attack error, Cordell came back with another kill and Point's lead continued to extend with errors from the Eagles. Faulkner started to climb their way back with three scores to trail by three until Sameily Marquez fired back with two consecutive kills. The Eagles continued to keep the set close as Faulkner trailed by two but Point would finish the set with a kill from Aaliyah Lobendahn, Claire Cordell, and an error from Faulkner to win the set 25-21. 

Set Three (25-17, Win) 

Set three started with the West Point Gymnasium being one "dig watch" as Jordan Palmer came into this set with one dig away from 1,000. Palmer would ultimately get the 1,000th dig early in the set which also helped spark an 11-3 run which was caused by errors from Faulkner, kills from Paige Lowe, Aaliyah Lobendahn, Sameily Marquez, and Claire Cordell along with two service aces from Marquez. Point continued to ride the momentum as Tianna Kynard added a kill along with Aaliyah Lobendahn giving Point another service ace. With the score being 16-11, two errors from the Eagles and two kills from Sameily Marquez helped push Point further to the finish line. The Skyhawks avoided a late run from Faulkner as Claire Cordell secured the final three kills for Point to finish the match in a sweep. 

In the Box 

Sameily Marquez led with 14 kills, 10 digs, two service aces, and one block. Claire Cordell added 13 kills, two service aces, six digs, and one block. Paige Lowe added 36 assists, 10 digs, and one service ace. Jordan Palmer led with 19 digs and added a service ace. 

Milestone Night 

Jordan Palmer came into the match 14 digs away from 1,000 career digs. Coming into set three, Palmer was one dig away where she easily surpassed it and added five more to her total. Palmer now sits with 1,005 career digs and #4 on the all-time list where she is two digs away from moving to #3 on the all-time list.

Point will return to the court for their final road game of the regular season as the Skyhawks take on Life University in Marietta, Georgia for an SSAC matchup starting at 6:00 P.M. on Thursday, November 2nd.
