Women’s tennis defeats Albany State; Skyhawks drop Friday’s match

WEST POINT, Ga. (Feb. 19, 2022) – The Point University tennis program competed in three matches over the weekend. The Skyhawks started their weekend off by traveling to face Appalachian Athletic Conference foe Reinhardt Friday afternoon. Both the men and women lost to the Eagles, with the women falling 5-2 and the men falling 4-3. On Saturday, the women traveled to Albany State and defeated the Rams 5-2.

Friday's matches

 The Skyhawks opened their weekend by opening AAC play in Waleska. Sofia Villalobos and Andrea Ovejero Fernandez earned a 7-5 victory at No. 1 doubles but were the only team to win in doubles action.

In singles competition, Villalobos and Ovejero won at No. 1 and No. 2 singles to help the Skyhawks pick up two points, but Reinhardt went on to win the rest of the singles matchups to take the 5-2 victory.

On the men's side, Trey Maust and Gavin Thomas earned a 6-2 victory at No. 2 doubles, but the Skyhawks could not get the doubles point. At No. 1 doubles, Guido Luna and Alex Verlaguet nearly clinched the victory as they fell in a 7-6 (5) tiebreaker.

Both teams picked up three victories apiece in singles competition, with the deciding match coming down to Thomas at No. 4 singles. Thomas fell in the first set 7-5 before bouncing back and winning the second set in a 7-6 (6) tiebreaker. Thomas fell in the third set 7-0 and the Eagles were able to slip past the Skyhawks. Verlaguet, Luna and Maust picked up singles victories in the 1-3 singles' slots.

Saturday's contest

On Saturday, the women's team bounced back with a 5-2 victory over NCAA Division II foe Albany State. The duo of Ovejero and Villalobos earned a 6-2 victory at No. 1 doubles and Lisa McKenzie and JoAnna Gallman won 6-0 at No. 2 doubles to secure the doubles point for Point.

Ovejero, Villalobos, McKenzie and Gallman won victories at No. 1, 2, 4, and 5 singles, respectively. Mariana Espinosa and Sofia Gonzalez took and Mariana Espinosa both took their matches to three sets but could not walk away victorious.

Both teams return to action on Friday, Feb. 25, as they host Huntingdon at 3 p.m. at the Sportsplex in Valley, Alabama.
