Point Swimming ready to make history at the NAIA National Championships

WEST POINT, Ga. (Mar. 4, 2024) - The Point University Men’s and Women’s Swim team will be representing the institution at the NAIA National Championships which will take place at the Columbus Aquatic Center in Columbus, Georgia. The dates for the meet will begin on Wednesday, March 6th, and wrap up on Saturday, March 9th. Point University Swim will have three swimmers who will represent the Skyhawks for Nationals. The swimmers will be Teagan Jose, Madison Akbari, and Yurri Prokopchuk. 

Teagan Jose 

The sophomore from Johannesburg, South Africa will be making her second appearance in the NAIA National Championships where she will be competing in the 200 IM, 100 Breaststroke, and 200 Breaststroke. Jose is someone who is always looking to compete with the best and keeps a humble mindset to move forward. Teagan Jose has already shattered many records including her own in the 200 IM. She has already made a case as one of the best swimmers to come through the Point University Swimming Program in two years. Jose will compete in the 200 IM on Thursday, March 7th, the 100 Yard Breaststroke on Friday, March 8th, and the 200 Yard Breaststroke on Saturday, March 9th. Teagan Jose is looking to be more than just a two-time national qualifier and instead looks to be a National Champion. 

Madison Akbari 

The freshman from Marietta, Georgia is full of energy and loves to compete each time she is in a race. Madison Akbari was an incoming swimmer to watch as Head Coach, Derek Kite thought highly of her when bringing her into the program. Madison Akbari set the school record for 50 Free with a time of 24.41 seconds on February 8th at the Conference Championships. Akbari is now looking to take the big stage in her first appearance by making noise on the National Level. Madison Akbari will be competing in the 50 Free on Thursday, March 7th, 100 Fly on Friday, March 8th, and the 100 Free on Saturday, March 9th. Akbari will look to continue her historic freshman year with a chance of being a national champion. 

Yurri Prokopchuk 

For the second time in his career at Point, Yurri Prokopchuk will be swimming at the NAIA National Championships in Columbus, Georgia. Prokopchuk is a quiet, focused guy out of the pool but once he begins his race, the impact is heard from afar. Prokopchuk is aiming to bolster his way to the podium with a top finish and continue to build his resume. At the Conference Championships on February 9th, he broke a school record for his time in the 100 Breast with a time of 55.28. With his record-breaking time, it was a no-brainer that would be swimming in the event for the National Championships. Yurri Prokopchuk will be making an appearance by competing in the 200 Breast for the second year in a row. His impact is true excellence of focusing and making history each time he races and he will look forward to making history for the National Championships. 

Information for the Meet 

The Swim meet will be held at the Columbus Aquatics Center in Columbus, Georgia, and will take place March 6-9th. Point University will have swimmers taking part in their respective races from March 7th-9th with the Pre-Limairy rounds scheduled to start at 9:00 A.M. and the finals to begin at 5:00 P.M.
