Women’s soccer ends season in AAC semifinals

WALESKA, Ga. (Nov. 10, 2021) – The Point University women's soccer team traveled to face Reinhardt University Wednesday evening in hopes of securing a spot in the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament championship game, but the Skyhawks' efforts came up short as they dropped an intense battle against the Eagles 3-0, in Waleska, Ga.

With the defeat, Point finishes the 2021 season 11-8-1 (10-3-1 AAC). This year was the first winning record the team has had since 2016 and the first appearance the team has made in the conference semifinal match since 2014.

Reinhardt's offense went straight to work, outshooting Point 15-0 in the first half, forcing Point goalkeeper Erica Burkhardt to make five saves. With less than 10 minutes remaining in the half, the Eagles found their way on the board and entered the break leading 1-0.

The Eagles went right back to work after the break, forcing Burkhardt to make three saves in the first four minutes of action before Reinhardt connected for their second goal in the 50th minute.

Nine minutes later, Carmen Kager took Point's first shot of the game, but Reinhardt's goalkeeper, Caroline Johnson, made the stop. Five minutes later, Reinhardt connected for their third goal of the game, and the Skyhawks were unable to answer back.

Overall, Reinhardt outshot Point 34-2 and had the advantage in corner kicks 13-1. Kager accounted for both of Point's shots, and Burkhardt ended the night with 14 saves.

"I am very proud of this team and how they kept improving all season," Head Coach Randy Douglas said. "Tonight we ran into a very good team that played extremely well. Our back line and Erica did everything they could to keep us competitive but eventually when you are forced into defending the whole match, there is bound to be a breakdown or two. It doesn't sour the season we had as we got maximum performances from players this year and they played hard for each other. I would also like to personally thank all the Skyhawk fans for making the trip tonight and supporting the team. It was a great atmosphere for a semifinal."
