Point Women’s Basketball ends season at the SSAC Tournament

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (Feb. 29, 2024) - The Point University Women's Basketball opened Postseason play at the Southern States Athletic Conference as the number six seed where they took on the number three seed, University of Mobile and fell to the Rams with a final score of 81-65. 

Shakira Wilson opened the scoring column for the Skyhawks as she splashed a three-pointer to open the game at 3-3. Point added a second basket in the paint as Ky'Leo Worriels powered through for the and-one layup and converted the free throw. The Rams followed with two three-pointers to bring their lead to 13-7 but two responding triples from Shakira Wilson cut the game to a one-point Mobile lead. Point gained their first lead as Mataea Boyd converted on the jumper. The Rams looked to end the first quarter on a run but Mataea Boyd knocked down the buzzer-beater to end the first quarter tied at 21. 

The Rams opened the second quarter by pushing their lead from one to 13 Points as Mobile got their offense going in transition. Chinedu Nnadi halted the run with a three-pointer to bring the score to 38-28. Mobile ended the only allowing two more points from the Skyhawks while adding six more points to end the half leading 44-31. Mataea Boyd opened the third quarter with a three-pointer for the first score of the second half. Point continued to look for ways to get their offense going with plans to cut into the Rams' lead. Mobile continued to stay in the driver's seat with the lead as Mobile's final 11 Points of the third quarter were from three triples and a layup. Ky'Leo Worriels opened the fourth quarter with two layups in the paint which was followed by two free throws from Antonia Pittman. Mobile continued to stretch the lead on their side by extending the score to 76-57. The Skyhawks ended the game with a three-pointer from Shakira Wilson and a layup from Shanbriah Rule. The Rams would hold their lead and eliminate the Skyhawks from the SSAC Tournament with a final score of 81-65. 

In the Box 

Ky'Leo Worriels led with 17 Points, 17 Rebounds, and eight blocked shots. Mataea Boyd followed with 13 Points, seven rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Shakira Wilson contributed with 12 Points, three rebounds, and two assists. 

New Program Record 

Ky'Leo Worriels' eight blocks in a single game earned her a new program record as she surpassed the previous record which was previously held by Taylor Tucker with five. 

Up Next 

The Skyhawks have wrapped up their 2023-24 Season following the loss from the University of Mobile in the SSAC Tournament and will now focus on preparing for the 2024-25 season with their second year slated in the conference.
