Women’s Basketball wraps up regular season road play with a win over Middle Georgia

COCHRAN, Ga. (Feb. 21, 2023) - The Point University Women's Basketball team returned to the court for their final regular-season road game in a Southern States Athletic Conference matchup against Middle Georgia State University where the Skyhawks took the win 59-54. 

Point opened the scoring column with Ky'Leo Worriels starting the game off with a layup in the paint. The scoring continued as Destinee Ellison converted on the three-pointer which was followed by a layup from Ananda Hughley to lead 7-0. Middle Georgia scored the following six points to trail by one but the Skyhawks held their lead after one with a 11-6 lead. 

The Skyhawks challenged Middle Georgia's defense by attacking the paint which drew two consecutive fouls. With Point converting the following four free throws, Ananda Hughley's three-pointer grew the Skyhawk lead to 18-6. The Knights followed with a 9-2 to cut into Point's lead by five. Destinee Ellison added her second triple of the game to hold the lead for the Skyhawks and Antonia Pittman sped past the defense for the layup. The Skyhawks went into the half without giving up the lead as the score stood at 25-21. 

The second half opened with the Knights tying the game with hopes of taking their first lead. Chinedu Nnadi's three-pointer and Ky'Leo Worriels' layup put the Skyhawks back in front to lead 30-25. The deep shooting for Point continued as Ananda Hughley added more momentum for the Skyhawks. Point continued to make Middle Georgia guess which was put on display as Jhakia Gist attacked the paint for a layup and Ky'Leo Worriels converted on the jump shot. Worriels followed with another jumper to have the Skyhawks end the quarter with a 40-31 lead. 

The Skyhawks did not waste time extending their lead as Jhakia Gist added another layup. Ananda Hughley followed with a three-pointer to continue bringing the energy needed in SSAC play. Hughley added another jumper to bring Point's lead to 47-37 with 5:49 left. The Knights climbed back with a quick 7-0 run to trail by three but two more layups from Point brought the score 51-44. As the Knights continued to keep it close, the Skyhawks made sure to continue knocking down shots as Jhakia Gist brought the lead to 55-48 with a triple. With 48 seconds left, Middle Georgia added a 6-0 run to trail 55-54. Antonia Pittman and Ananda Hughley put the finishing touches on the game by scoring the final two baskets to win 59-54.

Ananda Hughley led with 17 Points, six rebounds, and three assists. Ky'Leo Worriels followed with a double-double of 11 Points, 14 Rebounds, and three assists. Antonia Pittman contributed nine points, eight rebounds, and three assists.

The Skyhawks will return to action with their final regular season home game against Thomas University on Saturday, February 24th at 1:30 P.M. which will also serve as Senior Day for Women's Basketball.
