Women’s Basketball adds All-Conference Honors to their big season

WEST POINT, Ga. (Feb. 21, 2023) - The Appalachian Athletic Conference announced all-conference awards ahead of the conference tournament, which will begin on Wednesday, Feb. 22, and end on Saturday, Feb. 25. Multiple players on the women’s basketball team received honors in the following categories: AAC First Team All-Conference, AAC Second-Team All-Conference, Champions of Character, Newcomer of the Year, All-Academic Team, All-Defensive Team and Coach of the Year.

AAC Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year: Tory Wooley

Head Coach Tory Wooley had a goal set for this team to compete daily, and he believed in the team at every step. Wooley knew once the Lady Sky's bought in and came with a fierce competitive spirit; his girls could have a chance at something special. With the regular season now in the books, women’s basketball finished with their second consecutive 20-win season and also had a month where they went undefeated in December. Wooley’s way of keeping Christ first for the team and competing for each game showed as they finished with a record of 20-8. This is a well-deserved honor for Coach Wooley as the team prepares for the conference tournament as the #2 seed.

AAC Newcomer of the Year, First-Team All-Conference, All-Defensive Team: Mataea Boyd

The junior from Waycross, Georgia, took the year by storm by becoming one of the top two-way players in the league. Boyd finished by averaging 14.8 PPG, 2.1 steals per game, 5.8 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game. Boyd also had a season-high of 30 Points in the Dec. 13 game versus CIU, earning her AAC Player of the Week. She can now add AAC Newcomer of the Year, AAC First Team All-Conference, and All-Defensive Team to her resume.

First-Team All-Conference, All-Defensive Team: Marta Gimenez

Gimenez is no stranger to this list, as she highlighted this category last season in a Skyhawks uniform. The Graduate senior from Barcelona, Spain, felt she had more to prove as a player and wanted to help her team succeed in any way possible. Gimenez finished with 10.2 PPG, 4.9 Assists per game, 1.6 Steals, and 4.4 Rebounds per game. She also surpassed 1,000 career points, and 250 career steals in her collegiate career this season.

Second Team All-Conference, All-Defensive Team: Mirial Cannon

Mirial Cannon is a player who believes hard work can produce results. She proved that phrase as she added these honors to her resume. Cannon is a player that finds ways to get better, is a combo guard, and is a wing player that can get her shots wherever she chooses. Cannon had a big game against Faulkner University on Dec. 30, winning the AAC Player of the Week award. Cannon finished with averages of 9.2 PPG, 0.5 Steals per game, and 4.9 rebounds. She will now get to add more to her career with these honors as she continues to grow as a Skyhawk.

Second Team All-Conference, All-Defensive Team: Ky’Leo Worriels

Worriels was hungry for a fresh start as she came in as a transfer from Itawamba Community College, and she for sure made her impact. She proved to be one of the most challenging post players in the conference and gave the broadcasters at Point a continuous phrase of saying, “Blocked by Worriels" each game. Ky’Leo finished with averages of 8.8 PPG, 9.3 Rebounds per game, 1.0 steals per game, and 1.8 Blocks per game. She had a season of 21 Points against Milligan, 19 Rebounds against Kentucky Christian, and multiple games with four blocks. Worriels can add these honors to her resume.

Champions of Character: Kyra Hart

When you think of someone who represents Point on and off the court, you think of Kyra Hart. Her presence sparked a positive light for the team and the entire body of Point University as she won Homecoming Queen earlier in the fall. The sniper from three can add being a Champion of Character to her resume. Hart genuinely brings effort daily on the court and positivity off the court.
