Women’s Basketball falls to CIU in regular season finale

COLUMBIA, S.C. (Feb. 18, 2023) - The Point University women's basketball team traveled to South Carolina for their regular season road finale against Columbia International University in an Appalachian Athletic Conference matchup where they would fall in defeat with a final score of 66-55. 

Mirial Cannon got the Skyhawks on the scoreboard first with the layup in the paint. The Rams followed with two baskets to take the early lead. Point did not stay down for long as Ky'Leo Worriels made her presence in the paint known by scoring the next two layups. Mirial Cannon followed the offensive firepower with a made three-pointer which was followed by a layup from Mataea Boyd to bring their lead to seven. As the quarter ended, CIU finished on a 9-2 run to have Point lead by two. 

Marta Gimenez started the quarter with a three-pointer followed by another triple from Jasmine Griggs. Mataea Boyd added to the momentum with a layup to bring their lead to 27-18, forcing the Rams to call a timeout. Following that, Ky'Leo Worriels continued her paint presence with a layup to extend their lead further. CIU did not shy away from the pressure as the Rams went on another run to trail by three with under a minute left. Mataea Boyd and Jasmine Griggs would finish with two scored layups to head into halftime with a four-point lead. 

The second half started with the Skyhawks pushing their lead to six with a 39-33 lead, as Mirial Cannon and Ky'Leo Worriels were responsible for the first scores of the quarter. The Rams cut the game to a tie as they went on a 7-0 run to add some momentum to their side. CIU took their first lead since the first quarter, but that would last long as Sheyvonne Owens would score the layup to tie it at 43. Chinedu Nnadi came off the bench to hit a three-pointer which helped the Skyhawks stay reach within as they trailed by two. Jasmine Griggs continued to help Point find a way as she scored the layup to tie it at 48. CIU would make one free throw that put them ahead by one going into the fourth quarter. 

The Skyhawks found themselves on their heels in the fourth quarter as CIU started on an 8-0 run to lead by nine. Mirial Cannon would hit the layup to try to freeze the Rams' hot streak, followed by a take to the basket from Kyra Hart. As the game continued, Mirial Cannon converted on another triple to bring their deficit to four points. The Rams would hold the Skyhawks to no more scores in the fourth quarter and would finish with an 11-point win.

Mataea Boyd and Mirial Cannon led the Skyhawks with 12 Points. Boyd added five rebounds, three blocks and two assists on the stat line. Jasmine Griggs followed with nine points, three steals and four rebounds.

The Skyhawks have completed their regular season with a record of 20-8 and will get ready for the AAC Tournament, which will start on Feb. 22 and end on Feb. 25.
