Women's basketball advances to AAC semifinals with 74-52 win over KCU

KINGSPORT, Tenn. (Feb. 24, 2022) — No. 3 Point University women's basketball team competed in the quarterfinal round of the Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament against No. 6 Kentucky Christian University on Thursday evening and defeated the Knights 74-52.

Kentucky Christian got off to a hot start taking a 10-1 lead over the Skyhawks early in the first quarter. Point would storm back with a 12-2 run to take the lead at the end of the quarter, 14-12. The second quarter was a back-and-forth battle, but a three-pointer by Nicole Izuagie sparked a 9-0 run to put the Skyhawks ahead 23-16. Point would enter the second half leading 30-24.

A 3-pointer by KCU's Jenna Blakely would bring the Knights back within three to start the third quarter, but the Skyhawks would answer with an 8-0 run, beginning with a layup from Sheyvonne Owens, followed by back-to-back triples from Iyanna McMillan and Marta Gimenez. Blakely would once against pull the score back within three with a 3-pointer with 4:25 left in the quarter, but Point would go on a 7-0 run over the next minute and a half to earn its first double-digit lead of the game, 49-39. Gimenez and Hannah Williams would close out the third quarter for Point, combining for 10 points to enter the fourth quarter leading 59-41.

A jump shot from Williams would extend Point's lead out to 20 points in the fourth quarter, and the Skyhawks did not look back.  

Three Skyhawks made their way into the double-figures scoring column. Owens led the way with her 12th double-double, scoring 20 points and recording 11 boards, adding on four blocks. Hannah Williams followed with 17 points, adding three assists and three steals. Marta Gimenez was the final Skyhawk in double-figures with 18 points. Gimenez added six assists, seven rebounds and two steals to her stat line.

With the win, the Skyhawks advance to the semifinals of the AAC tournament. Point's next game will be against Milligan University on Friday, Feb. 25. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. in Kingsport, Tenn.
