Women’s basketball earns eight All-AAC selections

KINGSPORT, Tenn. (Feb. 23, 2022) – Five Point University women's basketball team members were recognized Wednesday evening, as they earned eight honors on the 2021-22 Appalachian Athletic Conference Women's Basketball All-Conference team.

Senior Marta Gimenez was named to the All-AAC first team and All-Defensive team. Gimenez has served as the Skyhawks' point guard and has anchored Point's offense, finishing the regular season No. 4 in the AAC in assists (105), and has contributed to a dominant Point defense as No. 2 in the AAC in steals (55). Gimenez averaged 12.5 points per game. Gimenez led Point, averaging 4.4 assists per game and 2.3 steals per game. Gimenez broke the program record for assists in a single season, which she currently holds with 138.

Senior Nicole Izuagie was recognized on the All-AAC second team for her efforts this season. Izuagie finished as No. 4 in the AAC in triples, going 59-for-206. She averaged 22 minutes per game in conference play and ranked No. 11 in points per 40 minutes with 21.1. Izuagie averaged 11.6 points per game in AAC play. Izuagie set a new school record this season, with most 3-pointers scored in a single game (eight) and most 3-point shot attempts in a single game (17).

Iyanna McMillan found her way into the double-figures scoring column in 16 AAC games this season to help earn her a spot on the All-AAC second team. McMillan finished the regular season averaging 12.7 points per game and ranked No. 11 in the AAC in triples, going 45-145. She finished No. 8 in the conference in free throw percentage (80.6), going 50-for-62 from the charity stripe. McMillan scored her 1,000th career point in Point's victory over Montreat on Jan. 31.

Newcomer Sheyvonne Owens was recognized on the All-AAC second team and All-Defensive team. Owens recorded 11 double-doubles during the regular season and broke two rebound program records. Against CIU on Jan. 18, Owens set a new record for most rebounds in a single game (22) and a new record for single-season rebounds with 320, breaking the record by 60 rebounds. Owens averaged 11.1 boards a game in AAC play and 9.5 points per game. She finished eighth in the AAC in field goal percentage (47.3), first in offensive rebounds, both in the NAIA (135) and conference (105), third in the AAC in defensive rebounds (151), second in total rebounds (256) and second in rebounds per game. Owens is second in the nation in defensive rebounds, total rebounds and rebounds per game.

Williams earned All-AAC second team and All-AAC Defensive team honors for her efforts this season. Williams led the team, averaging 13.0 points per game in AAC play and scored double-figures in 15 AAC matchups. She averaged 2.5 assists per game and 1.7 steals.

Point will be back in action in the quarterfinal round of the AAC tournament tomorrow, Thursday, Feb. 24, as they face Kentucky Christian University at 9:15 p.m. at the MeadowView Marriott Convention Center and Conference Resort in Kingsport, Tenn.
