Women’s basketball storms past Johnson in opening round of AAC tournament

WEST POINT, Ga. (Feb. 21, 2022) – The Point University women's basketball team hosted Johnson University in the opening round of the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament Monday evening and defeated the Royals 88-62.

Point entered postseason play as the No. 3 seed and the Royals as the No. 14 seed.

The Skyhawks quickly went to work, going on a 16-1 run in the first quarter to go ahead 26-9. A triple from Iyanna McMillan at the end of the period would help Point go ahead 29-13.

Point worked their lead out to 20 points in the second quarter, following a layup from Destinee Ellison. The Skyhawks entered the second half leading 50-30 following a 3-pointer from Nicole Izuagie with under a minute remaining in the half.

Point continued to hold its double-digit lead for the remainder of the game.

Point's offense was led by Sheyvonne Owens, who recorded her 11th double-double of the season in the first half and finished the day with 20 points and 15 rebounds. Izuagie also recorded 20 points, followed by Iyanna McMillan with 17 points. Marta Gimenez rounded out the Skyhawks in double figures with 10 points, adding on eight assists and three steals. Jasmine Griggs recorded five steals, Destinee Ellison had five assists and Hannah Williams finished with four assists and three steals.

Up next, Point advances to the quarterfinal round of the AAC tournament, held at the MeadowView Marriott Convention Center & Conference Resort in Kingsport, Tenn. The Skyhawks will play on Thursday, Feb. 24, at 9:15 p.m. against the winner of Montreat and Kentucky Christian.
