WEST POINT, Ga. (Feb. 19, 2022) – The Point University women's basketball team hosted Tennessee Wesleyan University Saturday afternoon and defeated the Bulldogs in dominating fashion, 72-43.

With Saturday's win, Point closes out the regular season 22-6 and 18-6 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference. Prior to Saturday's contest, the Skyhawks honored the six members of its senior class: Chazmere Anderson, Tasha Jackson, Marta Gimenez, Iyanna McMillan, Nicole Izuagie and Alexis Tate.

Skyhawk shooting dominates first half

After losing to the Bulldogs earlier in the season, the Skyhawks were hungry for a comeback and came out Saturday afternoon firing at all cylinders. Trailing 8-4 with under five minutes remaining in the opening frame, Marta Gimenez went on a 16-5 run, scoring the final 16 points of the quarter for the Skyhawks, to help Point take a 20-13 lead entering the second quarter.

Point carried its momentum over to the second quarter, and the Skyhawks defense limited TWU to only four points. The Skyhawks scored 14 points in the second period to take a 34-17 lead at the half.

In the second half, Point scored 19 points in both the third and fourth quarters and limited the Bulldogs to nine points in the third. Tennessee Wesleyan scored 17 points in the fourth quarter but could not catch up to Point's lead.

All 10 of Point's players who entered the game found their way into the scoring column, with Gimenez leading the way with 16 points (all from the first quarter). Gimenez added seven steals, three assists and four rebounds to her stat line. McMillan followed with 15 points and five rebounds. Hannah Williams recorded 11 points, adding four rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks, and Sheyvonne Owens and Izuagie finished the day with 10 points apiece. Owens added seven boards to her stat line. Jasmine Griggs, Kyra Hart and Destinee Ellison each recorded two points apiece, Ansley Miranda had three points and Tasha Jackson had one. The Skyhawks took advantage of 22 TWU turnovers.

"I couldn't be prouder of our seniors for getting the biggest win of the season," Head Coach Tory Wooley said. "Tennessee Wesleyan is a great team and I thought we played a terrific defensive game.
Our guard play was superb in the first half and Marta led the way hitting big shot after big shot. Iyanna and Nicole did an outstanding job knocking down shots, while Shey also had a solid game. It was a great team effort and a great way to finish the regular season."

Up next, Point will wait to find out who they will host in the opening round of the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament. The opening round game will be played on Monday, Feb. 21, at 5:30 p.m. inside West Point Park Gymnasium. Following Monday's game, the winner will advance to the final tournament site, which will be held Feb. 23-26 at the MeadowView Marriott in Kingsport, Tennessee.
