Women’s basketball picks up win No. 20 at Columbia

COLUMBIA, S.C. (Feb. 12, 2022) – The Point University women's basketball team traveled to Columbia College on Saturday for an Appalachian Athletic Conference matchup against the Koalas and won 63-56.

Point's win on Saturday was their 20th win on the season, as the Skyhawks are 20-5 (16-5 AAC).

"We found a way to win on the road against a very scrappy team," Head Coach Tory Wooley said. "We shot the ball a lot better in the second half with Nicole Izuagie leading the way. I thought Hannah (Williams) did a great job creating scoring opportunities for herself and her teammates. We'll make sure we do a better job closing out the game. Coach Charity and I couldn't be prouder to coach these young ladies to a 20 win and counting season."

Point's defense held the Koalas to 14 points in the first half. With 3:12 left in the first quarter, the score was tied 9-9, but Point scored the last six points of the period to lead 15-9 entering the second quarter. A layup from Izuagie would earn Point its first double-digit lead of the game with 6:51 left in the half, and Point would enter the break leading by 13 (27-14).

Both teams' offenses came out hot in the second half, with the Skyhawks scoring 18 points in the third quarter and Columbia scoring 16. Point led by 15 at the beginning of the fourth quarter and would hold the lead for the remainder of the contest, despite getting outscored 26-18 in the final frame.

Four Skyhawks found their way into the double-digit scoring column, led by Hannah Williams with 18 points. Izuagie followed with 14 points, scoring 12 points from behind the 3-point arc and added five rebounds and four assists to her stat line. Sheyvonne Owens and Marta Gimenez both recorded 10 points each. Owens had nine rebounds and Gimenez had six rebounds and six assists.

Next, Point will compete in its final road game of the season as they travel to Kentucky Christian University on Monday, Feb. 14. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
