Bulldogs slip past Skyhawks

ATHENS, Tenn. (Feb. 5, 2022) – The Point University women's basketball team traveled to play Tennessee Wesleyan University in an Appalachian Athletic Conference matchup Saturday afternoon, and the Skyhawks fell to the Bulldogs 72-54.

Tennessee Wesleyan opened Saturday's contest on a 10-0 run before Marta Gimenez got the Skyhawks on the board with a layup. Nicole Izuagie followed with a triple and Gimenez connected for another layup to cut the Bulldogs' lead down to three. With 2:41 remaining in the first quarter, Sheyvonne Owens connected for a layup to put the Skyhawks down by one, but the Bulldogs extended their lead out by four at the end of the quarter.

With less than five minutes remaining before halftime, Hannah Williams helped Point to its first lead of the day with two free throws to complete an 8-0 run by Point. Tennessee Wesleyan answered with three consecutive baskets from behind the 3-point arc to take a 29-26 lead entering the break.

The Bulldogs' momentum at the end of the half carried over into the third quarter as TWU opened with a 10-1 run to take a 39-27 lead. The Bulldogs would hold a double-figure lead for the remainder of the game, extending it to 21 points in the fourth quarter.

Only two Skyhawks made their way into double-figure scoring, with Williams leading the way with 19 points, going 6-for-14 from the field and 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Izuagie followed with 12 points. Owens led the Skyhawks under the basket with 14 boards and nearly recorded a double-double with eight points. Gimenez also recorded eight points.

With Saturday's loss, the Skyhawks fell to 18-4 (14-4 AAC) and the Bulldogs advanced to 16-5 (15-4 AAC).

Point will be back in action on Tuesday, Jan. 8, at Bryan University. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
