Women's basketball tops Columbia for AAC win

COLUMBIA, S.C. (Dec. 5, 2020) – Despite a close first half, the Point University women's basketball team prevailed over Appalachian Athletic Conference foe Columbia College 70-61 Saturday afternoon on the road.

The Koalas led 15-10 at the end of the first period, but the Skyhawks answered back in the second period, putting up 26 points to enter the second half tied at 36. Both teams played a close third period as Columbia entered the fourth quarter ahead by one. Point opened things up in the fourth quarter as the Skyhawks scored 22 points and outscored the Koalas by 10 to secure the AAC victory.

The Skyhawks had four members in double-digit scoring, with Iyanna McMillan leading the way with 14 points off 4-for-9 shooting. Hannah Williams and Nicole Izuagie followed McMillan with 13 points apiece and Marta Gimenez rounded out the Skyhawks in double figures with 12 points going 4-for-6 from the field. Kimberley Forbes led Point with 11 rebounds.

"I really have to tip my hat off to our players," Head Coach Tory Wooley said. "They played extremely hard and stayed together when we found ourselves down both in the first and second half. It's a testament to their hard work they put in this week outside of practice to fight through adversity. We did an outstanding job of rebounding the ball, but we have to do a better job of starting the game."

Point will return to West Point Gymnasium on Wednesday, Dec. 9, to host Truett McConnell University in an AAC matchup. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
