Battle of Highway 85 sees Point Softball drop two in a sweep

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (Apr. 20, 2024) - The Point University Softball team took the field for an afternoon Southern States Athletic Conference matchup against Faulkner University where the Skyhawks fell to the Eagles in a sweep. 

Game One (8-0, Loss) 

Faulkner opened the bottom of the first inning with a two-RBI single followed by a fielding error to score three runners for the early 3-0 lead. Point would be unable to add a hit through the first three innings as the Eagles followed in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single up the middle to extend the lead to 4-0. Hannah Phillips opened the top of the fourth inning with a single to left field followed by stealing second. Two strikeouts and a pop-up in the infield ended the inning with one hit and two left on base. Faulkner finished Game One by adding four runs in the following two innings to end the game in a run-rule with a final score of 8-0. 

Game Two (10-5, Loss) 

Hannah Phillips opened the top of the first inning with a single to right center then followed with stealing second. Ramsey Clark's sacrifice bunt helped advance Phillips to third for a scoring opportunity. Two pop-ups from the Skyhawks ended the inning with a runner left on base and no runs. Faulkner added their first run with bases loaded and a batter being walked. Faulkner followed with two more runs from two RBI Singles to extend the lead to 3-0. Point started to gain momentum with Hannah Phillips adding her second hit up the middle and Ramsey Clark being walked to first. The Skyhawks added their first two runs from a throwing error on third to have Chloe Mitcham and Hannah Phillips advance home. Brooke Burkett followed with an RBI single to center field to have Ramsey Clark sprint home for another run to tie the game at 3-3. The Eagles responded in the bottom of the fifth inning by adding four runs to increase their lead back to four. Three more runs from the bottom of the sixth moved the game to 10-3. Tia Coleman added a two-RBI double to right center to have Ramsey Clark and Hannah Phillips score. Point was unable to add another run at the top of the seventh to fall to a sweep.

The Skyhawks will wrap up regular season play in Thomasville, Georgia on Saturday, April 27th as Point takes on Thomas University starting at 2:00 & 4:00 P.M.
