Point Softball drops road SSAC Doubleheader to the Toppers

BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. (Mar. 24, 2024) - The Point University Softball returned to action for their second consecutive Southern States Athletic Conference doubleheader in North Mississippi to take on Blue Mountain Christian University where the Skyhawks fell to the Toppers in a sweep. 

Game One (2-1, Loss) 

The Skyhawks opened the top of the third inning with Wellsley Henderson adding a single to left field to add the first hit between both teams. Alyssa Burrows followed with a sacrifice bunt to advance Henderson to second but the Toppers were able to hold the Skyhawks scoreless in the inning. Blue Mountain followed in the bottom of the inning with two runners on base from a single to center field and an error from the shortstop. The Toppers took the lead with their first run with a single to left field to advance a runner home. The Toppers added to their lead with an RBI single to center field to bring their lead to 2-0. Point entered the top of the seventh inning with a single to left field from Brooke Burkett. The Toppers looked to strike out Wellsley Henderson at bat but a fourth ball walked her to first base. Alyssa Burrows followed with an RBI single to right field which advanced Brooke Burkett home for their first run. With two outs on the board, the Toppers were able to finish the game with a strikeout and take Game One with a final score of 2-1. 

Game Two (8-1, Loss) 

Blue Mountain opened the bottom of the first inning with an RBI single to center field to take the lead with their first run. The Skyhawks responded in the top of the second with Savanna Bryant opening with a double to left field. Brooke Burkett followed with a double center field which helped Bryant advance home to tie the game 1-1. The Toppers regained the lead with four runs in the following two innings to push their lead to 5-1. Point looked to match the energy of Blue Mountain but would be unable to add a hit for the rest of the game. With bases loaded, the Toppers finished the game with a home run to take Game Two with a final score of 8-1.

The Skyhawks will return to action at the West Point Softball field for an SSAC doubleheader against #19 William Carey University on Thursday, March 28th starting at 3:00 & 5:00 P.M.
