Point Softball falls in a sweep on Day One of the Cougar-Hurricane Classic

AMERICUS, Ga. (Feb. 16, 2024) - The Point University Softball returned to the field for a nonconference matchup against NCAA Division II, Georgia Southwestern University and NCAA Division II, Newberry College where the Skyhawks fell to both teams on day one of the Cougar-Hurricane Classic. 

Game One vs Georgia Southwestern (8-0, Loss) 

The Hurricanes opened the first inning with a tone-setting home run to take the first run of the game in the bottom of the first. Point looked to respond with their string of hits but would be unable to add any hits in the next inning. The Hurricanes added six runs in the second inning to lead 7-0 after two innings. Mary Durham added a hit in the top of the fourth inning toward shortstop and Skye Loftin added a single down the right-field line which advanced Durham to second base. The Skyhawks would end the inning with two runners left on base with zero runs to stay scoreless. The game ended in the fifth inning as the Hurricanes scored on their final run to win 8-0. 

Game Two vs. Newberry (18-3, Loss) 

Point Softball took the field for Game Two of the evening against Newberry College. The Wolves started the first inning with two runs to lead 2-0. Point added three runs in the third inning as Mary Durham reached on first base with an error from the right fielder. The result of this error also scored Hannah Philips and Ramsey Clark. Skye Loftin followed with a double to center field which scored Mary Durham home for their third run to trail 6-3. The Wolves added nine runs in the fourth inning to extend their lead and take the win in five innings with a final score of 18-3.

The Skyhawks will continue their play in the Cougars-Hurricanes Classic as Point takes on Tusculum University on Saturday, February 17th at 10:30 A.M. and will follow by traveling to Columbus for a matchup with Columbus State University at 4:30 P.M.
