Three sweeps in a row, softball takes down CIU on the road

COLUMBIA, Sc. (March 23, 2023) – The Point University softball team played an away AAC doubleheader on Thursday against Columbia International University and would sweep. The Skyhawks would win game one, 11-2 and win game two, 8-6 to take the sweep.

 

Game 1 – 11-2 WIN

The Skyhawks would open the doubleheader with four runs in the top of the first. Allie Davis would single to left field to score Devon Foster to make it 1-0. Skye Loftin would single to score Allie Davis and Taylor Knight to make it 3-0. Gabrielle Riley would double to right field to score Skye Loftin to make it 4-0. In the top of the second, Haley Lyner would single to second to score Kayla Wyatt to make it 5-0. The Rams would score their only two runs when they would double down the left field line to make it 5-2. The scoring would stop until the Skyhawks would turn their offense back on in the top of the seventh. Lyner would hit a two-run homer to center field to make it 7-2. Gabrielle Riley would single to left field to score Taylor Knight to make it 8-2. Wellsley Henderson would double down the left line to score Allie Davis to make it 9-2. Kayla Wyatt would hit a sacrifice fly to score Riley to make it 10-2. Devon Foster would later steal second and Brianna Plocharczyk would score on the throw to make it 11-2. The Skyhawks would have Ashlynn Hamm go back out for the bottom of the seventh in the circle. Hamm would get her fifth win of the season getting all three of the Rams batters out to get the 11-2 victory in Game 1.

Game 2 – 8-6 WIN

Both teams would wait to get the scoring started until the third inning. Haley Lyner would double to right field to score Devon Foster and Brianna Plocharczyk to make it 2-0. Later in the inning, Taylor Knight would single to center field to score Haley Lyner to give the Skyhawks a 3-0 lead. The Rams would take a 5-3 lead after the Skyhawks would allow three errors in the third. The top of the fourth, Skye Loftin would bring the Skyhawks back within one run after Loftin hit a solo homer to make it 5-4. The Skyhawks would retake the lead in the top of the sixth when they scored four runs to make it 8-5. Kayla Wyatt would double down the left line to score Gabrielle Riley and Alexus Griffin to make it 6-5. Haley Lyner would single on a hard hit ball to the third baseman that would hit off of her and go into the outfield to score Devon Foster and Kayla Wyatt to make it 8-5. The Rams would score one in the bottom of the sixth to make it an 8-6 game. Katelyn Jiles would finish her complete game with a strike out swinging, giving up one earn run and striking out three batters for the 8-6 victory in Game 2. The Skyhawks would get their third sweep in a row.

The softball team will be back in action on Saturday, March 25 when they finally head on home to take on Milligan in an AAC conference doubleheader. First pitch scheduled for 2:00 P.M.
