Softball gets midweek sweep of the Scotties

DECATUR, Ga. (February 10, 2023) – The Point University softball team played an away doubleheader on Tuesday against Agnes Scott College. The Skyhawks would sweep the doubleheader with scores of 7-6 (8 innings) in game one and 13-0 in game two.

 

Game 1 – 7-6 WIN (8 innings)

Haley Lyner would hit a two-run homer in the three spot to also score Alexus Griffin to make it 2-0 in the top of the first. The home half of the first would see the starter, Chloe Mitcham only record two outs and be relieved by Ashlynn Hamm. The Scotties would score four runs in the first to take the 4-2 lead. The Skyhawks would score in the fourth on a double by Skye Loftin that would score Taylor Knight to make it 4-3. The score would remain the same until the top of the sixth when Haley Lyner would single to score Alexus Griffin to tie the game up at 4-4. The Skyhawks would pinch hit for Wellsley Henderson in the top of the seventh with two outs and Henderson would come through with a two RBI double to score Brianna Plocharczyk and McKensie Barnes to give the Skyhawks the 6-4 lead. That two-run lead would be short lived because in the bottom of the seventh, the Scotties would score two runs to tie the game at 6-6. Allie Davis would get an RBI sacrifice bunt to score Lyner to take a 7-6 lead. Ashlynn Hamm would finish the game by getting the last batter to ground out into a fielder's choice for the 7-6 Game 1 win.

Game 2 – 13-0 WIN (5 innings)

The offense would be on a roll in Game 2 and would get started when Taylor Knight hit a two RBI single to score Haley Lyner and Alexus Griffin to take the early 2-0 lead. The second inning would see the Skyhawks score five runs starting with a two-run home run by Kayla Wyatt to make it 4-0. Taylor Knight would single to right field to score Alexus Griffin to make it 5-0. Allie Davis would reach on a throwing error, while both Taylor Knight and Haley Lyner would score making it 7-0. Lyner would hit a RBI sacrifice fly to score Alexus Griffin to make it a 8-0 game. The top of the fifth would see the Skyhawks add an exclamation point to their offensive production by scoring five runs starting with Kayla Wyatt singling to score Savanna Bryant to make it 9-0. McKensie Barnes would single to score Kayla Wyatt, Sabrina Russell and Tia Coleman to make it 12-0. Alexus Griffin would single to score Barnes to make it 13-0. Mary Michael Burnham would throw get a complete game shutout win going five innings, while allowing two hits and no runs.
