Softball drops afternoon AAC doubleheader to Reinhardt

WEST POINT, Ga. (March 1, 2023) – The Point University softball team played a home AAC doubleheader on Monday against Reinhardt University and would get swept. The Eagles would win game one, 4-0 and win game two, 4-2 to take the sweep.

 

Game 1 – 4-0 LOSS

The Skyhawks would get shut out in game one by a score of 4-0. The Eagles would score their first run in the first inning on an RBI groundout to make it 1-0. The offense of the Eagles would keep going in the second inning when they would hit a two RBI single to make it 3-0. The Eagles would add an insurance run in the sixth inning on an RBI single to help secure the 4-0 victory. The Skyhawks would remain hitless until the bottom of the third when Brianna Plocharczyk would hit a single, but would later be thrown out trying to steal second base. The bases would be loaded in the bottom of the fourth and seventh, but the Skyhawks would be unable to score a run in either inning.

In the Circle

Mary Michael Burnham would be the game one starter in the circle pitching two innings, allowing three earned runs on four hits, and walking none. Burnham would be relieved in the third inning by Ashlynn Hamm who would finish the game going five innings, allowing one run on five hits, walking three and striking out two batters. Burnham would take the loss in game one.

 

Game 2 – 4-2 LOSS

Haley Lyner would get the scoring started for the Skyhawks with her RBI single to score Devon Foster to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Eagles would tie the game up in the third when they would hit an RBI double to make it a 1-1 game. In the bottom of the third, Allie Davis would reach on an error by the Eagles shortstop and score Haley Lyner to make it 2-1. The Skyhawks would call timeout to talk to the starting pitcher Katelyn Jiles and on the next pitch after the timeout, the Eagles would hit a two run homer to make it 3-2. The Eagles would get a RBI double to make it 4-2. Devon Foster would field a single to right field and throw out a Eagles runner at the plate for the third out of the inning when Allie Davis applied the tag to keep the game within reach for the Skyhawks. Alexus Griffin would lead off the bottom of the seventh with a single. Haley Lyner would follow with a double over the center fielder's head, but Alexus Griffin would try to go first to home and would be thrown out at the plate on the 8-4-2 put out for the first out of the inning. Taylor Knight would line out to the center fielder in short left center and would also double off Haley Lyner who didn't tag up on the catch to end the game. The Eagles would get the 4-2, game two victory and leave West Point, Georgia with a sweep over the Skyhawks.

In the Circle

Katelyn Jiles would start game two and would throw 6.2 innings. Jiles would allow four runs on ten hits, walking one and striking out four batters. Ashlynn Hamm would come in to face one batter who would single to right field, but Devon Foster would come up and throw the runner coming around third out at the plate.

Road Warriors

The Skyhawks will hit the road starting Wednesday for six doubleheaders on the road. The six away doubleheaders coming up are:

March 8- @ Kentucky Christian

March 14- @ Brenau (GA)

March 17- @ Johnson (Tenn.)

March 18- @ Montreat (NC)

March 21- @ Agnes Scott College (GA)

March 23- @ Columbia International (SC)

 

Next softball game:

The softball team will be back in action this Wednesday, March 8 when they head on the road to Grayson, KY to take on Kentucky Christian University in an AAC conference doubleheader. First pitch scheduled for 1:00 P.M.
