Softball gets their first sweep of the season against Clark Atlanta

WEST POINT, Ga. (February 15, 2023) – The Point University softball team played a home doubleheader on Wednesday against Clark Atlanta. The Skyhawks would sweep the doubleheader with scores of 11-3 in game one and 17-1 in game two.

Game 1 – 11-3 WIN

The Panthers of Clark Atlanta would open the game with three runs in the top of the first inning to take an early 3-0 lead. The Panthers would score their first run by an error on the first basemen scoring the runner from third base and a 2-run homer. The bottom of first would see Haley Lyner hit an RBI double to score Devon Foster to make it 3-1. Kayla Wyatt would hit an RBI double to score Alexus Griffin to make it 3-2. The Skyhawks would tie it up in the bottom of the third when Sabrina Russell would hit an RBI single to score Gabrielle Riley to make it 3-3. The bottom of the fifth would see the Skyhawks scores two more runs to make it 5-3 off of a pass ball that would score Haley Lyner and a RBI ground out by Gabrielle Riley that would score Taylor Knight. The offensive explosion would come in the bottom of the sixth, when the Skyhawks would score six runs to make it a mercy rule victory at 11-3.

Inside the Circle

Mary Michael Burnham would get the win going three innings, allowing three earned runs from four hits and four strikeouts. Burnham would be relieved by Ashlynn Hamm in the top of the fourth. Hamm would pitch three innings, no runs, and no hits.

Offensive Leaders

Haley Lyner – 2 for 4; 2RBIs, 2R and 2B

Taylor Knight – 3 for 4; 2B, 2R

Sabrina Russell – 2 for 4; RBI, 2B  

 

Game 2 – 17-1 WIN

The Skyhawks would get the scoring started in the first inning when Taylor Knight would hit an RBI double that would score Haley Lyner to make it 1-0. The Skyhawks would have an absolute hit parade in the bottom of the second when they scored 12 runs to make it 13-0. Two more runs would be scored in the third inning to make it 15-0. The Skyhawks would tack on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to make it 17-0. The Panthers would get a run across in the top of the fifth off an error to left field to make it 17-1. After the lone run from the Panthers, the Skyhawks would get their final two outs, to take the doubleheader sweep and win 17-1.

 

Inside the Circle

Katelyn Jiles would go 2.2 innings and get her first win of the season. Jiles would give up one hit, one walk, while striking out three. Jiles would be relieved by Chloe Mitcham in the top of the third for her first collegiate outing. Mitcham would go 2.1 innings pitched, allowing one earned run on two hits, while walking two and striking out two.

Tia Coleman – 2 for 3; 3 RBIs, 2 R

Point returns to action at home this Friday, February 17, when they host non-conference opponent, Thomas University. First pitch of the double header starting at 1:00 P.M. EST. The Skyhawks will also be in action this Saturday, February 18, when they host non-conference opponent Stillman College with the first pitch at 2:00 P.M.
