Softball sweeps Stillman

WEST POINT, Ga. (Feb. 9, 2022) – The Point University softball team hosted Stillman College Wednesday afternoon at the West Point Park Softball field and defeated the Tigers 4-2 in game one and 9-5 in game two.

Game one: Point- 4 Stillman- 2

Point was first to get on the scoreboard in game one of Wednesday's doubleheader. In the bottom of the fourth, a single up the middle by Taylor Knight drove in Asia Jones to give the Skyhawks a 1-0 lead. The following inning, the Tigers connected for back-to-back singles, driving in two runs in the process to go ahead 2-1. Stillman's lead was short-lived as the Skyhawks posted three runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead 4-2. A single from Haley Lyner scored Chelsea Parker, and Asia Jones followed with a single to drive in Ariyon Hightower. Point's Ashlynn Hamm helped hold the Skyhawks' lead as the Tigers went down in order in the sixth and seventh innings.

Jones led Point's offense, going 2-for-3 with two RBI's. Lyner and Knight each went 1-for-3 with an RBI apiece. In the circle, Hamm went 7.0 innings, giving up six hits, two runs (both earned) and striking out four.

Game two: Point- 9 Stillman- 5

The Skyhawks got on the board first once again, this time in the bottom of the first with a sacrifice fly from Jones, bringing in Alexus Griffin. Point padded its lead in the second inning after a passed ball brought in Kayla Wyatt. In the fifth inning, Point rallied together to score five runs and take a 7-0 lead. The rally started with three consecutive hits to left field from Allie Davis, Gabrielle Riley and Meagan Pildner. With bases loaded, Devin Foster singled to center field, scoring Davis. Lyner then singled to left field, scoring Riley and Pildner, and a double to right-center from Jones would bring home Lyner and Foster.

The Skyhawks were poised to finish the game by keeping the Tigers off the board, but Stillman pushed a runner across in the fifth and Bailie Seales connected for a grand slam in the top of the sixth to cut Point's lead down to two (7-5). The Skyhawks, however, extended their lead back out to four with back-to-back singles from Knight and Brianna Plocharczyk that scored Lyner and Jones. Mary Burnham would get the Tigers out in order in the top of the seventh to help Point secure the sweep.

Devin Foster, Plocharczyk and Pildner accounted for two hits apiece and Jones and Lyner recorded three and two RBI's, respectively. Katelyn Jiles got the win, going 5.2 innings, giving up seven hits, five runs (all earned), walking four and striking out four. Burnham earned the save, going 1.1 innings in relief.
