Men's soccer ties 2-2 with No. 1 Keiser

WEST POINT, Ga. (Aug. 30, 2022) – The Point University men's soccer team returned to action for their first home opener of the 2022 campaign Tuesday night in a nonconference matchup against No. 1 Keiser University and tied 2-2.

The Skyhawks (0-1-1) saw themselves down early, as the Seahawks (1-0-1) jumped on the scoreboard just 4:05 into the match with a goal by Rui Reis. The Skyhawks would not be fazed by the early miscue when Diego Espino assisted a goal to Fabian Saborio in the 38th minute to tie the game 1-1. Two minutes later, the Seahawks would strike back with a goal by Lucas Jacobs, which would take Keiser into halftime leading 2-1. In the second half, a foul in the box by the Seahawks would allow Max Paul Bunsel to score a penalty kick in the 46th minute to tie the game at 2-2. Both teams would trade shots on goal throughout the half but would fail to convert. The game would remain tied as the final buzzer clocked at zero resulting in a draw.

Keiser outshot Point 16-11, limiting the Skyhawks to just three shots in the first half. On goal, Keiser had 10 shots, and Point recorded five. Point keeper Niels Van Gool recorded seven saves. Busnel recorded five shots, one on goal, Tommy Eskew recorded two shots, and Pablo Gamboa, Diogo Palhoto, and Saborio recorded a shot, with Saborio's resulting in Point's first goal.

Mark Wozniak was pleased to see his team compete with consistent quality and effort against a tough team like Keiser. "We knew it was going to take a lot of quality and effort, so we just knew if we did that and put money on ourselves, then we could get a good result." Wozniak complimented the Skyhawks for staying the course and responding to adversity throughout the match. "Responding when we go down and tying it back up again, that's huge against a team like this that won the National Tournament and had the number one ranking."

The Skyhawks return to action in the Labor Day Grizzly Classic, hosted by Georgia Gwinnett. First, Point will play Georgia Gwinnett on Saturday at 8 p.m. before facing Life University on Monday at 2 p.m.
