Gomes wins NAIA player of the week

WEST POINT, Ga. (Nov. 9, 2021) – Senior Julio Gomes of the Point University men's soccer team has been selected as the NAIA Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week. The NAIA made the announcement Tuesday, selecting Gomes from a pool of over 15 nominees.

Gomes, already the Appalachian Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, for the second time this season, had 11 saves in Point's upset victory over Reinhardt last Friday. The Skyhawks defeated Reinhardt 1-0 to advance to the semifinal round of the AAC tournament.

Over the last five games, Gomes has only allowed one goal while recording 17 saves. In 16 games played this season, he has only allowed 14 goals and has a total of 64 saves.

With the national athlete of the week nod, Gomes becomes the second member of the Point men's soccer team to earn a national weekly recognition and the first member to get the national recognition as a defensive player.

Gomes and the rest of the men's soccer team will be back in action tonight, Tuesday, Nov. 9, as they host Montreat in the semifinal round of the AAC tournament inside River Bowl Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
