Golden Goal dooms Skyhawks

WALESKA, Ga. (Sept. 29, 2021) – For the second time this season, the Point University men's soccer team played on Ken White Field at University Stadium on the campus of Reinhardt University and battled their way into overtime. This overtime match, however, did not go in the Skyhawks' favor, as Reinhardt scored a golden goal with 22 seconds left in overtime to win 2-1 Wednesday evening.

Earlier this month, due to unplayable field conditions, the Skyhawks hosted then ranked No. 9 Milligan University at Ken White Field and defeated the Buffs 2-1 in double overtime.

With the loss, the Skyhawks record falls to 2-3-1 and 2-3 in Appalachian Athletic Conference play. The Eagles preserved their perfect record, advancing to 7-0 and 4-0 in AAC play.

Neither team found the back of the net in the first 45 minutes of action, with both teams connecting for four shots apiece in the half. In the opening minutes of the second half, Reinhardt got on the board with a goal from Blake White from Trevor Robinson. However, Reinhardt's lead was short-lived as less than a minute later, Pablo Sanz Diez connected for his first goal of the season to even the score 1-1. Neither team scored the go-ahead goal for the remainder of the second half, despite a combined 18 shot attempts, and the game was forced into overtime.

Point was first to try for a golden goal, as the Skyhawks took the first two shots of the period. With less than two minutes remaining, the Eagles would force Point goalkeeper Julio Gomes to make back-to-back game-saving stops before a foul on Point set Reinhardt up for a free-kick from the top of the box. With 22 seconds remaining, Reinhardt's Rafael Pais found the top left corner of the net off the kick to win the game for the Eagles.

Point was outshot 18-13, including 13-5 in shots on goal. Jeronimo Leguizamon led Point's shot attempts with five, three on goal, and Julio Gomes made 10 saves.

Up next, Point stays on the road for an AAC matchup at Bryan College, Saturday, Oct. 2. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
