Men’s Lacrosse soars past Brevard for their first win

BREVARD, N.C. (Mar. 13, 2023)- The Point University Men's Lacrosse team traveled to North Carolina on Monday for a non-conference game against Brevard College, where the Skyhawks ultimately stormed the field with a victory to end their drought.

Point's mindset of coming together for a complete game showed as the Skyhawks started the first period by dominating on offense. Malyke Sillers put Point on the scoreboard to give the Skyhawks the early lead. This game became a tie when the Tornadoes responded with their own goal. This goal from Brevard woke up the Skyhawks as the rest of the quarter was all for the Skyhawks to execute. Jeff Knapp started his hot day by putting the Skyhawks back ahead, followed by two goals from Shaun McLaughlin and one from Malyke Sillers to end the first period with a 5-1 lead.

Brevard looked to ice the Skyhawks on offense in the second quarter as they scored their first two goals three minutes into the period. The Tornados brought their deficit within one score when Brevard scored their fourth goal, hoping to wipe away the lead from Point. The Skyhawks remained unfazed as Jeff Knapp added two more scores for the Skyhawks to go into the half with a 7-4 lead.

The Tornados continued to keep the game interesting for both sides as their plan to slow the Point down on the offensive side paid dividends in this period. The Tornadoes scored their first-half goal within the first two minutes, but the Skyhawks responded when Jeff Knapp scored his fourth goal. Brevard allowed only one goal in this period as the Tornadoes tacked on four more scores to give the Tornadoes their first lead of the evening.

Point entered the fourth quarter with a mindset to steal back the momentum and finish with style. Malyke Sillers proved that plan was in full swing as he tied the game back at nine. The offense of the Skyhawks continued to execute with precision by taking as many shots on goal to put the pressure on Brevard, which came out successfully when Jeff Knapp scored the following two goals for Point to put the Skyhawks back ahead 11-9. The defense of Point was put to the test to finish the game and not give up the lead they had worked so hard for. The Skyhawks would only allow one more score and ended the game by not allowing the Tornadoes to tie the game on the final shot as the buzzer sounded. The sweet victory for Point was displayed as the team stormed the field, collecting their first win of the season and the first official win in the Jordan Coates era.
