Benjamin Ross' double-double night, propels Skyhawks over TWU

WEST POINT, Ga. (February 14, 2023) – The Point University men's basketball team was at home for a AAC conference matchup against Tennessee Wesleyan and came out with the victory by a score of 67-63.

The Skyhawks saw their scoring get started when Justice Hayes was fouled while shooting a three-pointer and would head to the line for three free throws. Hayes would nail all three shots and would give the Skyhawks an early 3-0 lead. After a Theron Montgomery defensive rebound, he would pass it up the court to Jake Smith. Smith would soon find Benjamin Ross wide open for a three-pointer to give the Skyhawks a 9-6 lead at the 13:52 mark. With the Skyhawks up 16-12, Benjamin Ross would be fouled and head to the line where he would sink both of his shots to make it a 18-12 game with 7:24 remaining in the first half. At the 3:02 mark, Jake Smith would make a three-pointer the old fashion way when he would make his layup, get fouled and make his free throw to give the Skyhawks a eight-point lead at 28-20. Jack Gray was found open in the corner for a three-pointer to make it 31-22 with under two minutes left to play in the first half. The Bulldogs would make a layup before that half, but the Skyhawks would head to the locker room for halftime with the 31-24 lead.

The Bulldogs would get the ball to start the second half, but would miss a layup that Javier Turner would get a defensive rebound off of the shot. Turner would get the ball up court to Jack Gray, where Gray would get it back down to Turner for a layup for the 33-24 lead. The Bulldogs would go on a 12-0 run that would result in them regaining the lead at the 13:52 mark with a score of 42-41. Benjamin Ross would get a three-pointer the old fashion way and the Skyhawks would take over the lead at 50-48. After a 7-0 run by the Skyhawks, the Bulldogs would hit a three-pointer at the 4:40 mark to cut the lead to 60-57. Javier Turner would make a jump shot just under the three minute mark to make it 64-59 and that would cause Tennessee Wesleyan to call a full timeout. With 56 seconds left on the clock, the Bulldogs would get their second layup in under a minute to have them trailing by one-point at 64-63 and Point would call a full timeout. The Skyhawks would get a made free throw from Javier Turner and a pair of free throws from Benjamin Ross, would secure them the 67-63 victory at home.

Benjamin Ross led all Skyhawks scorers with his double-double on the night when he brought home 30 points and gathered 10 rebounds, while adding 3 steals. Only one other Skyhawk was in double figures tonight and that was Javier Turner with 10 points. Turner also added 8 rebounds, 2 blocks and a steal.
