Late surge by #9 Union, leads to Skyhawks home loss

WEST POINT, Ga. (Jan. 21, 2023) – The Point University men's basketball team returned to action Saturday evening for their home AAC matchup against #9 Union College and fell 71-58.

The Skyhawks got the contest started with a three-pointer from Benjamin Ross to make it 3-0 early. Justice Hayes would follow with another three-pointer to give the Skyhawks a 6-2 lead. Once the Bulldogs brought the lead back within three points, RJ Selman hit a wide open jump shot to make it 10-5. The Bulldogs would tie the game up at the 11:09 mark with a jump shot to make 11-11. At the 5:06 mark, Benjamin Ross would hit a jump shot to give the Skyhawks a four-point lead at 27-23. After the Bulldogs 6-0 run, Jack Gray would get his layup to go to make it tied at 29-29. RJ Selman would make both of his free throws after being fouled and later get his layup to go to give the Skyhawks a 33-31 lead. Jake Smith would get fouled shooting a three-pointer with the clock coming close to all zeros and would head to the foul line. He would make one of his free throws and give the Skyhawks the 34-31 lead heading to the locker room.

The Bulldogs would get the scoring started with a layup to cut the lead down to one-point at 34-33. On two separate occasions down the court, Justice Hayes would be fouled and make all four of his free throws to give the Skyhawks a 38-35 lead early in the second half. Benjamin Ross would make his jump shot at the 14:28 mark to give make it 46-39, in favor of the Skyhawks. The Bulldogs would go on a 10-0 run to give them a 49-46 lead. After a Benjamin Ross jump shot to bring the Skyhawks back within one-point, Point would call a full timeout. After a 11-0 Bulldogs run, RJ Selman would make a jump shot to make it 65-56, in favor of Union with 4:30 left in the second half. RJ Selman would get fouled and make both of his free throws to make it 65-58. The Bulldogs would end the game on a 6-0 run and come away with the 71-58 victory.

In the box 

Benjamin Ross led all Skyhawks in scoring with his 19 points, while adding six rebounds and a steal. Other Skyhawks in double digits were RJ Selman and Justice Hayes who both came in with 12 points on the evening.

The Skyhawks shot 33.3% (21 of 63) from the floor, 25.0% (3 of 12) from three-point land and 68.4% (13 of 19) at the charity stripe.
