Men's basketball outlast Bears at home

WEST POINT, Ga. (Jan. 17, 2023) – The Point University men's basketball team returned to action Tuesday evening for their AAC matchup at home against Truett-McConnell and came out with the victory 59-53.

The Skyhawks got the scoring started with their eventual leading scoring, when Benjamin Ross nailed a three-pointer, assist by Jake Smith to start the game off. Theron Montgomery would bring it down with his dunk to give the home team the early 5-2 lead. Jack Gray was found wide open by Justice Hayes to make it a 8-4 game with 15:59 left in the first half. After the Bears go on a 4-0 run, RJ Selman would be found open for a three-pointer by Javier Turner to make it 11-8. Once the Bears tied the contest up again at 14-14, Sam Rees would make one of his free throws to give the Skyhawks a 15-14 lead at the 8:53 mark. After a Bears 8-0 run, Javier Turner would dunk the basketball, assist by Jack Gray to get within four points at 27-23 with 1:11 left in the first half. Truett-McConnell would take a full timeout with 47 seconds left on the clock, but wouldn't get any points out of it. The Bears would take the 27-23 lead to the locker room. 

The second half would start similar to the first half, with Benjamin Ross scoring. Ross would make a layup, assist by Jake Smith to make it 27-25. Justice Hayes would be found open by Jake Smith for a three-pointer to give the Skyhawks their first lead of the second half at 30-29 at the 17:02 mark. The Skyhawks would extend their lead to five points with a layup by Jake Smith to make it 34-29. Javier Turner would make history at the 9:07 mark with his eighth block of the night to give him the record for most blocks in a game. The Bears would come back and make it a two-point game with a layup at the 7:00 mark that would make it 44-42. Later in the contest, Benjamin Ross would hit a jump shot off of a Jake Smith offensive rebound to make it 56-49 with 1:30 left in the game. Javier Turner would get his ninth block of the contest at the 55 second mark. The Bears would get four more points off of two layups in the final minute of the game to make it 57-53. Jack Gray would seal the game with making both of his free throws from the charity stripe to make it 59-53. That score would remain the same and the Point Skyhawks would finish winning 59-53 at home.

In the box 

Benjamin Ross led all Skyhawks with 17 points, while also adding six rebounds, a steal and a block. Only one other Skyhawk was in double digits and that was RJ Selman with 11 points. Selman also added two rebounds, an assist and a block.

The Skyhawks shot 37.3% (22 of 59) from the floor, 26.7% (4 of 15) from three-point land and 73.3% (11 of 15) at the charity stripe.

Making history

Javier Turner with his 9 blocks, becomes the leader in men's basketball with most blocks in a game. The previous record holder was Timothy Mitchell, when he had 7 blocks against Auburn Montgomery (Ala.) on 11/08/2012.
