Men's basketball outlast Bryan College on the road

DAYTON, Tn. (Dec. 7, 2022) - The Point University men's basketball team returned to action Wednesday evening for their Appalachian Athletic Conference away contest against Bryan College and came out with the 82-76 road victory.

The Skyhawks came out with Justice Hayes shooting a three-pointer in the first seconds of the game to get the scoring started in this contest. Sam Rees with a three-pointer and Jake Smith with a jump shot, would put the Skyhawks on a 5-0 run and give Point an 8-2 lead. We would see Point take a 30 second timeout after the Lions retake the lead at 17-16 at the 11:38 mark left in the first half. Theron Montgomery would get the offensive rebound from a miss three-pointer by Benjamin Ross and Montgomery would put a layup to give the Skyhawks the 18-17 lead. The Lions would take over the lead on a couple of key shots but would see their lead dwindle away by the made jump shot from Jack Gray to tie the game at 24-24 with 7:42 left in the first half. The 10-0 run for the Skyhawks would finish with RJ Selman making a jump shot to make it 29-24 at the 6:10 mark. The Lions would go on a 7-0 run to make it 34-32 lead with 2:44 remaining in the first half. Both teams would see multiple lead changes in the last two minutes of the first half. The Lions would have a turnover on their last offensive possession. The Skyhawks would capitalize with a layup to end the half by RJ Selman. The Skyhawks would head to the locker room with the 42-40 lead.

The Lions would foul Javier Turner and send him to the foul line on the first possession of the Skyhawks to start the second half. Turner would make both free throws to make it 44-40 score. Javier Turner would extend the lead to six on a layup after a Lions turnover. At the 15:17 mark, the Skyhawks would see Jack Gray hit a three-pointer to make it a 53-48 score. The Lions would make it a two-point game until Gentrell Taylor would make his layup and get fouled during the shot. Taylor would make his one-shot attempt from the charity stripe to make it a five-point lead at 58-53 with 13:45 left in the contest. RJ Selman would get fouled has well going up for his shot and would head to the line for two shots. Selman would make both shots to move the Skyhawks lead to 60-53. After Benjamin Ross would connect on a free throw to push the Skyhawks to 61, Ross would come up with a defensive rebound on the next Lions possession, drive down to his basket and lay it off the glass to make it a 63-57 game at the 9:45 mark. After a foul by Jack Gray, the Lions would connect on both of their free throws to itch closer with the score at 63-61 with 8:42 left. Gentrell Taylor with the left-handed layup, assist by Jake Smith would make it 67-63. Jack Gray would make it a seven-point game when he would nail his three-pointer to make it 70-63. On the next possession, Bryan would nail a three-pointer to only be down by four points at 70-66. After that shot, the Lions would take a full timeout. The Lions would come out of the timeout and triple team Gentrell Taylor and get him to turnover. However, the Lions wouldn't come up with any points off the turnover. Javier Turner would get his layup in to push the lead to six to make the score 72-66 with 5:25 remaining in the game. The Lions would come back with a made layup and on their next offensive possession, would get a twenty-foot jump shot to go to make it 74-70. The Skyhawks would find Sam Rees open for a layup to make it 76-70. The Lions would make it a two-possession game with their made layup to make it 76-72. Bryan would call a 30 second timeout at the 2:29 mark. After a few missed opportunities, Point would take a full timeout with 1:23 remaining in the game. Coming out of the timeout, RJ Selman would be fouled, but before he could shoot his two shots, Bryan would call a full timeout. Selman would connect on both shots from the charity stripe to make it a six-point lead at 78-72. The Lions would get a quick layup to get the lead down to four points and take would another full timeout to set up their defense. The Skyhawks would try to get the ball up court without allowing Bryan to foul, but they would foul RJ Selman with 28 seconds left in the game. Selman would again connect on both free throws to make it an 80-74 game. Coming off a defensive rebound, Jack Gray would get fouled by the Lions. Gray would make both of his free throws to extend the lead to 82-74. The Lions would get one more layup to go in, but that wouldn't be enough. RJ Selman would dribble to end the game with the Skyhawks coming away with the 82-76 win on the road at Bryan.

RJ Selman led all Skyhawks in scoring with his 18 points, while also adding two rebounds, two assists and went 8 for 8 from the charity stripe. Jack Gray (16 points), Gentrell Taylor (11 points), and Javier Turner (10 points) would finish the game in double digits.

The Skyhawks shot 50.9% (29 of 57) from the floor, 33.3% (6 of 18) from three-point land and 85.7% (18 of 21) at the charity stripe.
