Men’s basketball falls in regular-season finale

WEST POINT, Ga. (Feb. 19, 2022) – The Point University men's basketball team hosted Tennessee Wesleyan Saturday afternoon in its final game of the regular season and fell to the Bulldogs 72-59.

Before Saturday's game, Point honored the members of its senior class: Corey Bowen, Ray'Shawn Dotson, Lorenzo Freeman Jr. and Ray Reeves. Point also honored Skyhawk alum, Jarell Holmes.

With 14:22 remaining in the first half, the score was tied 8-8, but a triple from TWU's Ray Tyler sparked a 12-2 run to put the Bulldogs ahead by 10. With less than six minutes remaining, Jack Gray connected for a triple and Freeman followed with a jump shot to bring the score back within two (23-21). The Bulldogs would extend its lead back out to double figures in the closing minutes of the half and enter the breaking leading by 16 (43-27). The Bulldogs would hold its double-figure lead for the entire second half to secure the victory.

Freeman finished the day with 25 points, going 11-for-24 from the field and 3-for-9 in perimeter shooting. He added eight rebounds, two assists and two steals to his stat line. Bowen recorded a double-double with 11 rebounds and 10 points and Gray finished the day with 11 points, going 5-for-7 from the field.

Point finished the regular season 15-15 (11-13 AAC). The Skyhawks will now turn their attention to Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament play, which begins on Monday, Feb. 21. Point earned the No. 9 seed and will travel to face the No. 8 seed Bluefield. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.

The winner of Monday's contest will advance to the quarterfinal round at the Meadowview Marriott Convention Center & Conference Resort in Kingsport, Tenn. Quarterfinal matchups will be played on Thursday, Feb. 24.
