Cold first half dooms Skyhawks against Reinhardt

WEST POINT, Ga. (Jan. 15, 2022) – The Point University men's basketball team hosted in-state Appalachian Athletic Conference rival Reinhardt Saturday afternoon inside West Point Park Gymnasium and fell to the Eagles 83-66.

The Eagles took a 37-22 lead entering the second half, as the Skyhawks were 9-for-32 from the field, 1-for-12 from the 3-point arc, and 3-for-8 from the charity stripe in the first half. Reinhardt opened the game on a 13-2 run and Corey Bowen scored Point's first five points of the game, beginning with a layup at the 16:55 mark and ending with a dunk with 12 minutes remaining in the half. With less than six minutes remaining in the half, Lorenzo Freeman Jr. connected for a layup, making the score 26-20, but the Eagles would close the final minutes out on an 11-2 run.

Reinhardt would return to work out of the break, earning their largest lead of the day, 56-32, with 15:44 remaining. Over the following two minutes, Point would go to the free-throw line, six times and the Skyhawks would go 11-for-12 from the charity stripe to cut Reinhardt's lead down to 18 (61-43). Gentrell Taylor and RJ Selman connected for both of their free throws, Nichaune Jones followed, going 1-for-2, Bowen sunk both his shots, Jones followed connecting for both of his, and Bowen ended the Skyhawks' run with two made free throws.

Reinhardt would answer Point's run with three trips to the free-throw line from Gregg Hobbs, who connected for all six of his shots and the Skyhawks were unable to make up the scoring distance as the Eagles led by 14 or more for the remainder of the contest.

The Skyhawks shot 42% from the field in the second half, 50% from the 3-point arc, and 85% from the free-throw line. Overall, the Eagles outshot Point from the field 53% to 36%.

Bowen and Selman led Point with 18 points apiece, and Freeman followed with 11 points. Taylor led the team with five rebounds and five steals, Bowen followed with four boards, Freeman finished with three steals and Ray Reeves and Selman had three assists apiece.

Up next, Point hits the road for an AAC matchup against CIU on Tuesday, Jan. 18. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Columbia, S.C.
