Men’s basketball falters at home against Montreat

WEST POINT, Ga. (Jan. 11, 2022) – Point University men's basketball senior Lorenzo Freeman Jr. recorded his 1,000th career point as the Skyhawks fell 77-62 to Appalachian Athletic Conference foe Montreat College Tuesday evening inside West Point Park Gymnasium.

Freeman gave Point its first and only lead of the night with a layup followed by a jump shot to give the Skyhawks a 7-4 lead with 16:55 left in the first half. Montreat's Noah Dunn would tie the score 7-7 with a triple to begin a 14-0 run by the Cavaliers, as they entered the last 10 minutes of the first half, leading 18-7. Freeman cut Montreat's lead back down to six with a triple followed by a layup, but that was as close as Point could get until a layup from Ray'Shawn Dotson would cut Montreat's lead down to four with 43 seconds remaining in the half (33-29). An old-fashioned 3-pointer from Montreat's JaJa Davis would put Montreat ahead 36-29 at the break.

In the second half, the Cavaliers continued to extend to hold its lead, extending it out by as many as 15, and the Skyhawks were unable to make a comeback.

Freeman led Point with 19 points and was followed by Ray Reeves with 13. RJ Selman led with nine points off the bench, and under the basket, Javier Turner and Dotson led the Skyhawks with eight and seven rebounds, respectively. Dunn and Davis led the Cavs with 29 and 25 points, respectively.

With Tuesday's loss, Point falls to 8-8 (4-6 AAC) and Montreat advances to 11-4 (9-3 AAC).

The Skyhawks will be back in action Thursday, Jan. 13, as they host Johnson (Tenn.) in an AAC matchup at 7:30 p.m.
