Skyhawks let early lead slip away in 67-57 loss at home

WEST POINT, Ga. (Jan. 4, 2022) – The Point University men's basketball team hosted Bryan College Tuesday evening in an Appalachian Athletic Conference matchup inside West Point Park Gymnasium and despite never allowing the Lions in the lead for the entire first half, the Skyhawks fell 67-57.

With the loss, Point falls to 8-7 (4-5 AAC) and Bryan advance to 8-5 (5-4 AAC).

The Skyhawks got out to a hot start to open the 2022 portion of its season, taking a 7-0 lead in the first two minutes of action. The Lions would answer with a 7-0 run of their own to tie the game up before Ray Reeves connected for a 3-pointer to retake the lead for Point. Over the following four minutes of action, Point would earn its largest lead of the night with a triple from Lorenzo Freeman Jr. to put the Skyhawks ahead 17-9. The Lions would battle back, scoring eight of the following 10 points to cut Point's lead down to two (19-17). Point would extend its lead back out to eight with a 9-3 run with 5:30 remaining in the half (28-20). Once again, the Lions did not allow the Skyhawks to get too far ahead, with Bryan following with a 9-3 lead of its own to cut Point's lead down back down to two (31-29). The Skyhawks entered the second half leading 38-34.

Bryan continued to threaten Point's lead over the first 10 minutes of the second half, tying the score three separate times, before taking the lead with 9:18 remaining off a free throw from Noah Mulaski. A free throw from Tommy Carter would tie the score 51-51, but the Lions would go on a 12-2 run over the next seven minutes of action to extend its lead out 63-53 and go on to earn the win. Bryan limited Point to only 19 points in the second half and scored 33.

Freeman led all scorers with 20 points and had a team-high of six rebounds. Corey Bowen also recorded six rebounds and was the second Skyhawk in the double-digit scoring column, with 10 points. Jake Smith followed with seven points and a team-high of four assists and Gentrell Taylor had a team-high six rebounds and recorded six points.

Up next, the Skyhawks will travel to Kentucky Christian University on Saturday, Jan. 8, for an AAC matchup at 4 p.m. Point defeated KCU earlier in the season, 89-82. Following Saturday's contest in Kentucky, Point will play its next three matchups inside West Point Park Gymnasium.
