Strong first half lifts football to 27-20 win over Union

 

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. (Oct. 30, 2021) — Adam Sanders rushed for 102 yards and was one of four members of the Point University football team to score a touchdown Saturday evening, as the Skyhawks defeated Union College 27-20. 

In total, Sanders made up 102 of Point's 228 rushing yards. Sensir Carnes followed close behind with 98 rushing yards and also recorded a touchdown. In the air, Jacquez Bartley received two passes for 42 yards and picked up a touchdown for the Skyhawks. Point's final touchdown came from quarterback Brenton White who rushed for one yard to get Point on the board in the first quarter. 

Point's strong defensive presence showed up once again and was led by Aaron Anderson who recorded 12 tackles and was followed by Parker Clemons and Gabriel Jacon-Duffy  who had eight tackles apiece and recorded two sacks and and three sacks, respectively. 

White got Point on the board with under four minutes remaining in the first quarter, but the Bulldogs responded with an 18-yard touchdown run from Isaiah Wright to send the game into the second quarter tied 7-7. 

In the second quarter, Point's offense went straight to work, while the defense kept Union off the scoreboard. White connected for Bartley with 10:19 remaining in the quarter to give Point a 14-7 edge, and Sanders rushed for a 15-yard touchdown less than four minutes later, to put the Skyhawks ahead 21-7 entering the break. 

Late in the third quarter, Carnes rushed for a 2-yard touchdown to extend Point's lead out by six. Union would answer with a 74-yard touchdown pass from Walker Russell to Chris Thomas. Point led 27-14 entering the final quarter. 

After back-to-back made field goals, Union trailed by seven points and had possession with less than a minute remaining in the game. In the Bulldogs final play of the game, Russell connected with Wright but Wright  was pushed out of bounds before completing the pass, and the Bulldogs were unable to complete their late game comeback. 

With Saturday's win, Point advanced to 2-7 and 2-3 in the Mid-South Conference. 

The Skyhawks have two games remaining with both being inside Ram Stadium. The Skyhawks will play their final MSC Appalachian Division game next Saturday, Nov. 6, as they host Bluefield at 6 p.m.
