Baseball takes the series over Middle Georgia in home SSAC Play

WEST POINT, Ga. (Mar. 8, 2023) - The Point University Baseball returned to the field for a Southern States Athletic Conference series against Middle Georgia State University where the Skyhawks took the series 2-1. Middle Georgia took Game One with a 6-4 win but dropped Game Two to Point with a final score of 2-1. The following day, the two Georgia SSAC teams battled in a nine inning game where Point won 8-6 which also gave Head Coach John Tyler his 200th career win as a head coach. 

Game One (6-4, Loss) 

The Skyhawks took the first run as Point loaded the bases and as a result, saw Alex Marquand get walked to score Hunter Neumayer. Middle Georgia followed with a single to left field to get a runner on base with two outs. As Point looked to get out of the inning, the Knights added a home run to add two runs and take the lead at 2-1. Jaysen Dower's sacrifice fly to right field helped Rafael Jackson score a run and tie the game at two. The Knights regained the lead by adding two runs in the fifth inning to bring the score to 4-2 with Point looking to respond. The response was quickly shown as Alex Marquand doubled to score Silas Butler home for their third run. The Skyhawks were able to tie the game with Brett Campbell coming in as the pinch runner and scoring on a wild pitch. The Knights followed scoring their final two runs while holding off the Skyhawks to take Game One with a final score of 6-4.

Game Two (2-1, Win) 

Both opponents remained scoreless for the first six innings which showed how perfectly matched both teams were. The Skyhawks looked to warm up at bat but would be held without hit through the six innings. The first score came from Middle Georgia as the Knights scored on a sacrifice fly to lead 1-0. The Skyhawks followed adding multiple hits in the seventh inning which sparked their momentum. This was shown as Hunter Neumayer singled to score Rafael Jackson home to tie the game at 1-1. Point would show perseverance at the right time with a single to center field from Alex Marquand which scored Silas Butler home to bring the score to 2-1. The ninth inning saw the Knights looking to either tie the game or take the lead but multiple pop-ups ended the game with the Skyhawks tying the series at 1-1.

Game Three (8-6, Win) 

The anticipation was set for Game Three as the winner of this game would be the winner of the entire series. The action picked up in the fifth inning as a double to left field scored two runs to put the Knights ahead 2-0. Mason Davis responded with a home run to left field which scored Davis and Daniel Gonzalez home to tie the game at two. Middle Georgia looked to bring worry to Point as a homer to left field and a single to right field scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning to lead 5-2. Point remained composed as a single from Rafael Jackson started a big inning for the Skyhawks. With Zeb Baird being hit by a pitch, Rafael Jackson followed by scoring a run off the errors of Middle Georgia. Mason Davis' sacrifice fly to center field followed the speed of Zeb Baird advancing home to bring the lead of the Knights to 5-4. The resilience of Point continued to show as a perfectly placed bunt by Sam Baker helped load the bases for a chance to take the lead. Alex Marquand did not waste his opportunity at bat as he smacked a double past the shortstop which scored Daniel Gonzalez, Silas Butler, and Sam Baker home to put the Skyhawks in the lead. Slade Mink's single to left field helped Point add their fourth run of the bottom of the sixth inning to lead 8-5. The Knights kept their hopes alive with a home run to center field but would be unable to score any other runs to drop the game and series to the Skyhawks.

Milestone Added 

Head Coach John Tyler secured his 200th career win as a head coach following the Game Three win over the Knights to add to his historic legacy at Point University.
