Baseball drops heart breaker to CIU in Game 1

WEST POINT, GA., (April 27, 2023) – The Point University baseball played Game 1 of their three-game series against Columbia International University this Thursday. The Skyhawks would drop a heart breaker by the score of 7-6.

 

The Rams would put up five runs in the top of the second inning to take a 5-0 lead. The Rams would follow up the five runs in the second with a run in both the third and fourth innings to make it a 7-0 game. The Skyhawks would start their comeback in the bottom of the seventh when Alex Marquand would hit a 2 RBI single to center field that would score both Sam Baker and Jaysen Dower to make it 7-2. In the bottom of the eighth, Trent Sheppard would get a pinch hit single through the left side to score Jhamante Woods to make it 7-3. Jaysen Dower would hit a sacrifice fly to score Jackson Bush to make it a 7-4 game. Sam Baker would continue the comeback with his double to left center to score Trent Sheppard to make it a 7-5 game. Heading to the bottom of the ninth with the Skyhawks being down two runs with two outs, Jackson Bush would come to the plate with runners at second and first. Bush would hit a double down the left field line that would score Woods, but JR Curley (pinch runner for Zeb Baird) would get nailed at the plate for the last out of the game. The Rams would take a game one victory, 7-6 after throwing out Curley at the plate.

 

The Skyhawks would send Cole Brown to the mound to start Game 1 of the three-game series against the Rams. Brown would last three innings giving up six runs with five being earned, scattering seven hits, allowing one walk and striking out five batters. Salter Greene would come out of the bullpen in the fourth inning and would throw four innings allowing one run in his outing. Ben Beasley would get the eighth and ninth and would allow no runs, giving up two hits, walking one and striking out one batter.

             

Next Game

The baseball team will be back in action tomorrow, Friday, April 28 with the first pitch of Game 2 scheduled for 3:00 P.M. The Skyhawks reschedule Senior Day will take place before Game 2 of the series tomorrow at 2:15 P.M.
