Woods' go-ahead home run in extra innings, lifts Skyhawks to a split against the Buffs

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 15, 2023) – The Point University baseball team would head on the road this weekend to play a three-game series against Milligan. Due to weather conditions Friday and Sunday in the Johnson City, Tenn. area, forced both teams to only play a doubleheader on Saturday. The Skyhawks would split with the Buffs while winning game one, 6-4 (12 innings) and losing game 2, 4-3 to split the series.

Game 1 – 6-4 (12 innings) WIN

The Buffs would drop out to a 1-0 lead after the first inning. The Skyhawks would get their scoring started in the third inning when Slade Mink would hit a sacrifice fly to score Brett Campbell to make it a tie game at 1-1. Later in the third, Jhamante Woods would reach first on a fielding error by the third baseman to score Kaleb Podger to make it a 2-1 game. The Buffs would retake the lead in the bottom of the fourth, when they hit a solo home run to make it 2-2. Alex Marquand would single to center field in the fifth and Sam Baker would score on a throwing error by the center fielder to make retake the lead for the Skyhawks at 3-2. In the top of the seventh, Slade Mink would hit a groundout to the first baseman that would score Jaysen Dower on the advancement to move the lead to 4-2. The Buffs would get one run back in the bottom of the seventh to make it 4-3. In the bottom of the ninth inning, the Buffs would tie the ballgame up at 4-4 on an RBI single. After a soft ground ball to the Skyhawk's shortstop, that would be fielded and thrown away, the Buffs would celebrate a 5-4 victory.

The umpires would look at the last Buffs batter's bat and examine it to see if there was an infraction. After the umpires met for 15 minutes off the field, they ruled that the bat wasn't checked in the pre-game bat testing and didn't have a sticker. Due to that ruling, the game remained tied at 4-4 heading to extra innings.

Jhamante Woods would hit a 2-run go-ahead homerun to left field to give the Skyhawks a 6-4 lead in the top of the twelfth. Daniel Crabtree would relieve Gene Aberoutte for the bottom of the twelfth after Aberoutte threw 2.1 innings and allowing no runs. Crabtree would get three outs and get the one inning save for the Skyhawks in their Game 1, 6-4 (12 innings) victory.
