Baseball takes doubleheader against Bluefield (VA)

WEST POINT, Ga. (March 4, 2023) – The Point University baseball team played games one and two of home AAC three game series against Bluefield (VA) and won both games of the doubleheader. They would win game one, 7-1 and game two, 10-9.

 

Game 1 - 7-1 WIN

 

The Skyhawks would score the first run of the game in the bottom of the third when Slade Mink would get an RBI sacafice fly to left field that would score Jackson Bush to make it 1-0. Sam Baker would hit a two RBI single that would score Noah Watkins and Zeb Baird to make it 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth. The Skyhawks would add one more run in the bottom of the fifth on a Zeb Baird sacafice fly to right field that would score Slade Mink to make it 4-0. The Rams would score their lone run in the top of the eighth to make it 4-1. The Skyhawks would get some insurance runs in the eighth inning when Jaysen Dower would score on a pass ball and Alex Marquand would hit a two RBI single. The two RBI single would score Jackson Bush and Sam Baker to make it 7-1.

 

On the mound

Cameron Seiwert started on the mound for the Skyhawks. Seiwert would get the win going six innings, allowing no runs, scattering four hits, walking four and striking out four. Sage McWaters would go 1.1 innings, allowing one earned run on a hit, walking two and striking out one batter. Chandler Griggs would shut the door going 1.2 innings and getting a save. Griggs would scatter two hits and striking out four batters. 

 

Game 2 - 10-9 WIN

 

The Rams would get on the scoreboard first in the top of the first to make it 2-0. The Skyhawks would get those runs back in the bottom of the first when they would score five runs. Slade Mink would walk with the bases loaded to score Jackson Bush. Jhamante Woods would hit an absoulte no doubter grand slam to make it 5-2. In the bottom of the third, Chase Tolbert would score on a wild pitch to make it 6-2. Later in the third, Sam Baker would hit a sacafice fly to right field to score Noah Watkins to make it 6-2. The Rams would score six runs in the fourth and one run in the fifth to make it 9-7. Jhamante Woods would hit another home run in the fifth inning. This time, a solo home run to cut the Rams lead to 9-8. After Cale Whigham would strikeout three batters in the top of the sixth, the Skyhawks would have a chance to retake the lead. Kaleb Podger would hit a double to the right fielder that would be missed played and result in Podger going to third base and scoring Jackson Bush to tie the game up at 9-9. Later on in the bottom of the sixth, Kaleb Podger would slide head first at home plate to score on a passed ball to give the Skyhawks a 10-9 lead heading to the seventh inning. Cole Brown would come in for the ninth and induce two quick ground ball outs to get two outs. After walking the next two batters, he would strike out the next Ram batter to finish his save and secure the Skyhawks 10-9 victory.

On the mound

Daniel Crabtree would get the start in game two for the Skyhawks. Crabtree would go 3.1 innings, allowing eight earned runs on seven hits and would walk one batter. Bailey Mara would throw 1.2 innings, allowing one earned run on two hits, walking three and striking out one batter. Cale Whigham would throw the sixth inning and pick up his first win of the season. Whigham would go one inning, allowing no runs, no hits, walking two and striking out three. Cole Brown would pitch the seventh and shut the door recording his second save of the season. Brown would throw one inning, allowing no runs walking two and striking out his last batter. 

 

Next Game

The baseball team will play game three of the home AAC conference series against Bluefield on Sunday, March 5 with the first pitch scheduled for 1:00 P.M.
