Skyhawks split Sunday twin bill, but take AAC opening series with Reinhardt

WALESKA, Ga. (February 26, 2023) – The Point University baseball team played games two and three of the three game AAC conference series on the road, against Reinhardt. The Skyhawks would split the twin bill on Sunday with winning game two, 16-5 and losing game three, 8-6. The Skyhawks would take the series against Reinhardt, winning two out of the three games on the weekend.  

 

GAME 2 – 16-5 WIN (7 innings)

The Skyhawks would get another quality start on the mound from Game 2 starting pitcher, Carson Curry. He have six innings of work, allowing two earned runs on four hits and striking out nine Reinhardt batters. Ben Beasley would come in and finish the game in the seventh inning for the Skyhawks to ensure the 7 inning mercy rule in game two, 16-5. The bats were on fire again in game 2 for the Skyhawks with 16 runs on 17 hits, plus adding three doubles and two home runs. Kaleb Podger would go 4 for 5 in game 2, hitting a home run, double, driving in three runs and scoring four times. Alex Marquand would get the hit parade started with his 2-run homer in the top of the first. Zavion Anderson would also add an extra base hit with his double in the contest. Players with multiple RBIs were Kaleb Podger (3), Alex Marquand (2), Zeb Baird (3), Jhamante Woods (2), and Sam Baker (2).

GAME 3 – 8-6 LOSS

The Skyhawks wouldn't get the start they needed from their Game 3 starter, Gene Aberoutte, as they were forced to go to the bullpen in the second inning to bring in Cole Brown. Brown would go 3.1 innings, allowing two earned runs off three hits, before giving way to Daniel Crabtree who throw a clean sixth inning. The offense still put up six runs in the seven-inning contest, but it wasn't enough for the win. The Skyhawks would be kept off the score board until the fourth inning, when they would cut the early Reinhardt 6-0 lead to 6-4. A pair of solo shots would expand the Eagles lead to 8-4. The top of the sixth, Zeb Baird would reach first base by an error on the Eagles shortstop. The Skyhawks would capitalize on that error with a wall scraper homerun from Jhamante Woods to cut the Eagles lead to 8-6. After Daniel Crabtree threw a scoreless sixth inning, the Skyhawks would send four batters up to the dish in the top of the seventh, but wouldn't produce any runs. The final score of the series finale with Reinhardt, 8-6 loss.

Player of the Week Nominee: Kaleb Podger – DH

Kaleb Podger had an outstanding week swinging a hot bat for the Skyhawks going 11/19 (.579 batting average). Podger would add four doubles, eight runs batted in, one walk, nine runs scored and would hit three home runs on the week.

 

Welcome Back: Jhamante Woods – 2B

Jhamante Woods in his first game back in 16 days, he would 4/10 (.400 batting average). Woods would add eight runs batted in, four runs scored and three home runs in the first AAC conference weekend.

 

NEXT GAME:

The Point Skyhawks will return to action at home for a series on Friday, March 3 and Saturday, March 4 against Bluefield. First pitch of the series will be Friday at 2:00 P.M., which will also be Game 1 of a doubleheader.
