Late scoring dooms Skyhawks at Faulkner

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (Feb. 22, 2022) – The Point University baseball team held No. 6 Faulkner to only two hits over nine innings Tuesday evening, but the Eagles took advantage of 16 walks and six Skyhawk errors to earn a 10-8 victory over Point.

Faulkner got on the board early with three runs in the bottom of the first. An error, a hit by pitch, and a walk loaded the bases, and a following hit by pitch drove in Faulkner's first run of the game. Back-to-back walks later in the inning would drive in two more runs.

In the top of the second, Kole Sonnier would answer with a 3-run home run to tie the game 3-3, and Connor Varnum would connect for a double down the right field line to score Jackson Bush in the top of the third, to give Point a 4-3 lead. The Eagles would even the score with a run in the bottom of the third, but a passed ball would allow Francisco Garcia to score in the top of the fifth to help the Skyhawks regain the lead 5-4. Once again, Faulkner would respond with a run in the bottom of the inning.

At the top of the next frame, an RBI double from Jakobe Smith would score Sonnier and Jhamante Woods would extend Point's lead an inning later with a two-run home run. The Skyhawks entered the eighth inning leading 8-5, but the Eagles would not give up easily, as they rallied for five runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 10-5 lead. Out of the five runs scored by Faulkner, only one run scored off a hit.

Point combined for 11 hits, with Bush leading the way, going 3-for-4. Garcia and Varnum each recorded two hits and Varnum and Woods led the team with three and two RBIs, respectively.

Next, Point will return to West Point as they host Reinhardt in their Appalachian Athletic Conference opener Feb. 25-26. Point's AAC opener will begin on Friday, with first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m.
