Point Volleyball splits in Pool Play on Day One of the SSAC Tournament

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (Nov. 14, 2024) - The Point University Volleyball team opened Day One of the Southern States Volleyball Championships hosted at the Cramton Bowl Multiplex in Montgomery, Alabama where the Skyhawks took on the University of Mobile and the University of Tennessee Southern. The Skyhawks fell to the Rams in a sweep but turned around in the next match to sweep the Firehawks.

Game One vs. University of Mobile (3-0, Loss)

The Rams capitalized on their versatility on the offensive end. At the same time, neutralized Point offense to a hitting percentage of .100. Mobile held the Skyhawks to under 15 Point through the first set with multiple blocks, service aces, and kills. Through set two, the Skyhawks looked to match the intensity of the Rams, but the attack errors and kills from Mobile proved to be too much through set two. Multiple blocks and kills from Mobile through set three halted the Skyhawks to under 20 and fell to the Rams in a sweep. Tianna Kynard and Claire Cordell led with seven kills for the Skyhawks. Paige Lowe led with 22 assists and added 10 digs for a double-double. Defensively, Jordan Palmer led with 15 digs for the Skyhawks.

Game Two vs. UT Southern (3-0, Win)

The Firehawks put the Skyhawks in a situation of fighting through the adversity of holding the lead throughout the first set. Kills from Jasmyn Ceasar and attack errors from the Firehawks tied the set at 24. Ceasar's firepower was enough to finish the first set with the final two kills to complete the comeback over UT Southern. The Firehawks found themselves in a similar situation of slowing down the Skyhawk offense in the early going, with their biggest lead being 17-11. Kayla Johnson and Jasmyn Ceasar give UT Southern's defense trouble with multiple kills and assisted blocks. Again, the set was tied at 24 until the Skyhawks finished off with a kill from Tianna Kynard and an assisted block from Kynard and Kayla Johnson. Point took their momentum into set three as Claire Cordell entered the fray to give UT Southern more problems that the Firehawks had to adjust to. UT Southern looked to make a big run but Point was one step ahead as the firepower from Kayla Johnson and Jasmyn Ceasar was enough to secure the final two kills of the sweep. Jasmyn Ceasar led with 16 kills and six digs. Kayla Johnson followed with 13 kills and two blocks. Claire Cordell added 11 kills and 12 digs for a double-double.
