Second half boost surges TWU past the Skyhawks

WEST POINT, Ga. (Sept. 21, 2022) - The Point University women's soccer team returned to the pitch Wednesday afternoon for an Appalachian Athletic Conference matchup against Tennessee Wesleyan University and fell 3-0. 

Both teams came into the afternoon on a mission to overpower each other on the offensive end. The Skyhawks looked to start the match quickly as they took two quick shots at goal in the first 11 minutes. The Bulldogs' intensity was heightened as TWU allowed only one more goal for the first half. Both teams went into halftime scoreless. 

Business picked up for the Bulldogs in the second half as they increased their firepower on the offensive end by taking three shots on goal in the first two minutes. Seven minutes later, the Bulldogs' plan to execute an offense worked in their favor as TWU scored their first goal of the game. Defensively, Point looked to put a stop to the Bulldogs' momentum. Tennessee Wesleyan doubled down on their offensive execution as the Bulldogs scored another goal to extend their lead to 2-0. The Skyhawks continued to find answers on the offensive end as Point took a few more shots on goal to try to halt TWU. Nearing the end of the match, the Bulldogs scored their final goal of the game to bring the final score to 3-0. The Skyhawks were held to just one shot in the second half. 

In the box 

Tennessee Wesleyan outshot Point 19-4, along with taking 12 shots on goal compared to Point's three. Keiry Bonilla, Victoria Cortes, and Tamia Jones each took a shot on goal for the Skyhawks. In goal, Erica Burkhardt made nine saves for Point.

The Skyhawks will return to action as they travel to Barbourville, Kentucky, for an AAC matchup Saturday, Sept. 24, against Union College. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
