Women’s Basketball falls to Reinhardt in Saturday matchup

WEST POINT, Ga. (Nov. 4, 2023) - The Point University Women's Basketball team returned to the court for a non-conference game against former Appalachian Athletic Conference foe, Reinhardt University where the Skyhawks fell 81-75. 

The first quarter began with Mirial Cannon scoring the first basket of the game which was followed by a three-pointer from Mataea Boyd. Boyd continued to get settled into the game as she made another three to Point ahead 8-4. Reinhardt began to force turnovers as the Eagles scored on the following possessions to tie the game and eventually take the lead. The Eagles continued to put pressure on Point with their scoring but a third three-pointer from Mataea Boyd brought the game to a 14-11 score. As the quarter winded down, Boyd continued to feel a rhythm as she scored on free throws and her fourth three-pointer to put Point back in the lead 18-16. Reinhardt would score the final layup as Point led 21-20 going into the second quarter. 

The Eagles began the second period with two consecutive scores as Reinhardt made a layup and followed with a three-pointer to regain the lead. Following this, the Eagles went on a 16-2 run to bring their biggest lead of the game with 14 with a score of 36-22. Point started to climb their way back by knocking down free throws which was followed by a fifth three-pointer from Mataea Boyd to cut Reinhardt's lead to single digits. Lanee Edwards breezed past the defense for the layup to bring the score to 36-30 and Ananda Hughley knocked down the mid-range jumper to continue to help Point fight their way back. The Eagles would continue to find ways to score as Reinhardt made the final layup of the half to go into the break leading 39-32. 

The Eagles began the third quarter with an 11-point lead as Reinhardt scored on a layup and three-pointer. The Skyhawks' offense started to spread the offense around as Shanbriah Rule and Lanee Edwards showed their quickness with the smooth layups to trail 46-42. Mataea Boyd's layup helped cut Reinhardt's lead to 44-42. The Eagles retaliated by scoring the following points but Mataea Boyd continued to light it up from deep as she hit another three-pointer to bring the score to 51-49 with the Skyhawks trailing. Point's run continued with Ananda Hughley following with a three-pointer along with Shanbriah Rule with another layup. As the quarter ended, Mataea Boyd made another triple but Reinhardt would score the final basket on a layup. 

Mataea Boyd started the final period of play with a layup and Mirial Cannon followed with two made free throws from the charity stripe. Reinhardt continued to hold their lead but a layup from Mataea Boyd and a three-pointer from Shanbriah Rule cut the game to a 67-66 score. With both teams trading baskets, Shanbriah Rule made another three to give Point their first lead since the first quarter but the Eagles wiped it away with a go-ahead layup. Mataea Boyd scored the following layup to regain the lead but Reinhardt ended the game with two clutch three-pointers to win 81-75.

Mataea Boyd led with 39 Points, seven rebounds, and three steals which broke a school record for most points scored in a single game. Shanbriah Rule followed with 14 Points, five assists, and one steal.

The Skyhawks will return to the court for a nonconference game on the road against Montreat College on Saturday, November 11th starting at 2:00 P.M.
