Skyhawks unable to overcome Bryan’s hot shooting night

WEST POINT, Ga. (Jan. 25, 2022) - The Point University women's basketball team returned to the court Wednesday night for an Appalachian Athletic Conference matchup against Bryan College and fell to the Lions with a final score of 82-61. 

The Lions got on the scoreboard with a quick three-pointer to take the early lead. Jasmine Griggs responded with a layup to give the Skyhawks their first basket of the game. Bryan College scored the next two baskets, with one shot being from behind the arc and the next shot being two made free throws. Jasmine Griggs ended the cold streak from Point by sinking the mid-range jumper, but the Lions responded with a three-pointer to bring their lead to 11-4. Point's offense started to find a rhythm as Mirial Cannon and Mataea Boyd scored the next two layups. As Bryan continued to find ways to achieve on offense, the Skyhawks ended the first quarter with a jumper made by Mirial Cannon and a three-pointer from Ananda Hughley to trail 17-13. 

Ananda Hughley cut started the second period by tying the game as she made her second triple, sinking the mid-range shot. Bryan took back their lead as Samantha Russell, and Kadee Ferrell converted on the following two scores, which caused the Skyhawks to call a timeout. The Lions returned with a 6-2 run to bring their lead to double digits, but Marta Gimenez wiped away the double-digit deficit by knocking down the three-point bomb. On the following possession, Mirial Cannon scored on the layup to bring the score to 33-25 with the Lions ahead. Bryan finished the quarter on an 8-0 run as the Lions scored a layup and made two three-pointers. 

Mataea Boyd got the Skyhawks going in the third quarter by intercepting a pass to finish with a layup on the offensive end. After the two made jump shots from Bryan, Mataea Boyd fired back with a three-pointer. Ky'Leo Worriels added her name to the scoring sheet by crashing the boards for the putback layup, which was then followed by another made jumper from Jasmine Griggs. The Lions continued to counter Point with three-pointers, bringing their lead to 15. Jasmine Griggs and Marta Gimenez were responsible for the following two scores as they made their layups to now trail 52-39. The Skyhawks continued to find ways to stay in the game as Mataea Boyd and Marta Gimenez knocked down jumpers to bring their deficit closer. Bryan finished the quarter going on another run by sinking their last two shots to lead by 20. 

Mataea Boyd started the final period with another made three-pointer followed by a layup from Ky'Leo Worriels to trail 66-51. Bryan continued to make it count from behind the arc as they knocked down another triple. Point looked to make a late run as Chinedu Nnadi made the layup along with Marta Gimenez sinking a three-pointer with two defenders contesting her shot. The Skyhawks scored two more baskets before the final buzzer but could not move past the Lions. 

In the box 

Marta Gimenez led with 12 Points, three assists and three rebounds. Mataea Boyd added 12 Points, five rebounds, three assists and one steal. Jasmine Griggs contributed with 10 Points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals.
