Softball sweeps Columbia (SC) at home in AAC matchup

WEST POINT, Ga. (March 4, 2023) – The Point University softball team played a home AAC doubleheader against Columbia (SC) and swept the doubleheader. They would win game one, 10-8 and game two, 10-1 (6 innings).

 

Game 1 - 10-8 WIN

 

The Skyhawks would start the game off early with a solo home run by Haley Lyner to make it 1-0 in the bottom of the first. The offense would get rolling in the bottom of the second when Alexus Griffin would hit a scafice fly to right field that would score Brianna Plocharczyk to make it 2-0. Taylor Knight's three-run bomb would give the Skyhawks a 5-0 lead heading into the third inning. The Koalas would have a hit parade in the top of the third, scoring seven runs to take a 7-5 lead. The Skyhawks would answer back with Alexus Griffin's double in the bottom of the third to score Brianna Plocharczyk and Allie Davis to make it a 7-7 game. The Skyhawks would take a 10-7 lead in the bottom of the sixth. The offensive production would start when Gabrelle Riley would hit an RBI double to score Taylor Knight, Allie Davis would later score on a pass ball and Tia Coleman would hit an RBI double to score Gabrelle Riley to make it 10-7. The Koalas would get a run back in the seventh, but it wasn't enough as Katelyn Jiles would hold on for the save and the 10-8 game one victory.

In the Circle

Mary Michael Burnham would get the start for the Skyhawks. Burnham would go two innings, allowing four runs with three being earned on five hits, walking one and striking out one batter. Chole Mitcham would get the win for the Skyhawks in game one. Mitcham would go four innings giving up three earned runs on five hits, while allowing two walks. Katelyn Jiles would get a save when she came out for the seventh and closed it out for the Skyhawks. Jiles would go one inning, allowing one earned run on two hits and striking out two batters.

 

Game 2 - 10-1 WIN (6 innings)

 

The Skyhawks would pick up where they left off in game one by scoring two runs in the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead. Haley Lyner would hit a RBI double that would score Devon Foster. Later in the first inning, Taylor Knight would reach on an error by the shortstop and that would allow Haley Lyner to score. In the second inning, Devon Foster would hit an RBI single that would score Gabrelle Riley to make it 3-0. More offensive fireworks would happen in the second when Alexus Griffin would hit a two RBI double to score Devon Foster and Brianna Plocharczyk to make 5-0. The Koalas would get their lone run of game two in the top of the fourth to make it 5-1. In the bottom of the fifth, Haley Lyner would hit an RBI double to score Alexus Griffin to make it 6-1. Also in the bottom of the fifth, Allie Davis would hit a 2 run homer to make it 8-1. Wellsley Henderson would call game in the bottom of the sixth when she would hit a double that would score both Haley Lyner and McKensie Barnes to walk it off in a mercy rule in six innings with the final score, 10-1.

 

In the Circle

Katelyn Jiles would get the start for the Skyhawks in game two after getting a save in game one. Jiles would throw three innings, allowing one run on three hits, walking one and striking out one. Ashlynn Hamm would throw three innings, allowing no runs while scattering four hits and striking out one batter.

 

Next Game

The softball team will be back in action on Monday, March 6 for a home doubleheader against Reinhardt with the first pitch scheduled for 2:00 P.M.
