Late goal by Columbia College (SC) clips Skyhawks

Columbia, Sc. (Oct. 25, 2022) - The Point University men's soccer team took a trip to Columbia, Sc. Tuesday night to square off against Columbia College (SC) in a conference matchup and fell 2-1. 

The Koalas and the Skyhawks both looked to the first half to make some quick noise, but neither club could get a goal to the net. Luca Ganio-Mego took a shot on goal in the second minute of the contest, but was stopped by Columbia College (SC) goalie, Austin Gunnels. Daniel Oviedo showed off his skills in goal during the first half with saves in the twenty fourth and twenty ninth minutes of the game to keep everything knotted up with no score. Both teams would take a 0-0 score into halftime.

Skyhawk's goal in the sixty fourth minute by Luca Ganio-Mego gave Point a 1-0 lead. That lead would be cut short by the boot of Columbia College (SC), Jimmy Yancey with a goal at the seventy fifth minute of the contest. The Koalas would extend their lead to 2-1 with a goal in the eighty seventh minute of the contest by Ratesh Leach with the assist by Eh Ah. Those two unanswered second half goals would give Columbia College (SC) the 2-1 victory.

Point outshot Columbia College (SC) 20-8 with eight shots on goal compared to the Koalas who had four. Luca Ganio-Mego was the leading scorer for the Skyhawks with three shots, two shots on goal and one goal in the contest. Other players with shots on goal in this close matchup were, Diego Espino, Brandon Cervantes, Fabian Saborio, Tommy Eskew, and Diego Matarrita. Daniel Oviedo tallied three saves.

Point will return to the pitch for their last regular season contest as they travel to Bluefield, VA to take on Bluefield University for an AAC matchup on Saturday, Oct. 29. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
