Skyhawks suffer shutout to No. 23 Georgia Gwinnett

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (Sep. 3, 2022) – The Point University men's soccer team traveled to Lawrenceville, Ga. Saturday night for the Grizzly Labor Day Classic to face Georgia Gwinnett and fell 6-0.

The Skyhawks would not make it easy for the Grizzlies in the first half to score as both teams defensively would remain solid. With 26 seconds left in the first half of play, Georgia Gwinnett would find their way on the scoreboard to go into halftime with a 1-0 lead.

In the second half of the match, the Grizzlies looked to turn up the intensity and did not look back. In the first 14 minutes of the half, Georgia Gwinnett tacked on two more goals to start their run. The Skyhawks looked to slow down the Grizzlies but were defensively stalled for the half. With the score already being 3-0, Georgia Gwinnett did not let their foot off the gas as they held Point scoreless for the remainder of the game and added three more goals to their lead to bring the final score to 6-0.

Point took six total shots, with three on goal compared to the Grizzlies' 22 shots and 16 on goal. Zane Whitehead, Ethan Aler and Luca Ganio-Mego each took a shot on goal. Simon Niksch recorded 10 saves for the Skyhawks.

Point will return to action in the Grizzly Labor Day Classic, hosted by Georgia Gwinnett on Monday facing Life University in a neutral site game at 2 p.m.
